So assuming you do what most people do and buy the $60 plan, you're out at least $1,639 over two years for last-gen netbook hardware running a gimped OS that doesn't even let you change the desktop wallpaper. Not exactly a screaming deal. We'd say you're much better off finding a netbook with XP on sale and just getting a regular free-on-contract USB data card, which you'll be able to use on multiple machines -- or, if you absolutely must have Windows 7, holding out for the coming flood of Pine Trail netbooks at CES, which we're hoping will come preloaded with 7 Home Premium.
The netbooks feature 10-inch screens and weigh less than 3 pounds, easily fitting into backpacks, purses and briefcases. The netbook pricing requires the purchase of a new two-year AT&T DataConnect plan - including a 200MB plan option for a newly reduced price of $35 per month or a 5GB plan for $60 per month. AT&T DataConnect plans offer consumer and small business subscribers access to the nation's fastest 3G network, along with free use of AT&T Wi-Fi service, featuring more than 20,000 hot spots nationwide.
"Demand for netbooks remains strong among consumers, small business customers and those who desire constant access to the Internet while on the go," said David Haight, vice president, product development, AT&T emerging devices. "Paired with the nation's fastest 3G network, AT&T Wi-Fi service, and now the value and ease of use of Windows 7, these devices will make very attractive and affordable gifts this holiday season."
"Microsoft is excited that AT&T and its customers are choosing Windows 7 on netbook PCs because it helps simplify tasks, works the way customers want, and makes new things possible," said James DeBragga, general manager of Windows Consumer Product Marketing at Microsoft. "By pairing Windows 7-based netbook PCs with AT&T's 3G service, AT&T customers now have easy access to the ultimate companion PC. It is a small, yet fully featured computer that helps them work efficiently, enjoy rich entertainment and experience the Web virtually anywhere they go. We look forward to supporting AT&T in its efforts."
