Gateway to Bring Subsidized LT2016U Netbook to Verizon

You won't get far by shopping for a netbook with just $150 in hand, even if you're willing to browse your favorite online vendor's refurbished section. But for those of you willing to sign up to a 2-year subscription plan through Verizon, $150 suddenly becomes enough to snag a Gateway LT2016u netbook (after $100 mail-in-rebate).
Minus the monthly fee, that's about as cheap as you're going to find a 10.1-inch netbook in the foreseeable future. Other specs include an Intel Atom N270 (1.6GHz) processor, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive spinning at 5400RPM, built-in webcam and mic, multi-card reader, 3G support, and Windows XP.
Not a bad deal considering the LT2016u retails for $500, but as Engadget rightly points out, shouldn't these subsidized netbooks be free already?
Originally expected to show up in the second half of 2009, Intel has begun shipping its Atom N280 processor to PC makers several months ahead of schedule, says InfoWorld. Like its predecessor, the N270, the newest Atom also utilizes a single-core design and is intended for netbooks, but there's more than meets the eye than a simple clockspeed boost.
Unlike the N270, which was paired with the 945GSE chipset, the N280 + GN40 chipset combo brings high-definition content to netbooks. The hardware-based high definition video decoder makes it possible to view 720p HD videos, making the platform a bit more competitive with Nvidia's upcoming Ion, which brings 1080p content to the table.

Google adds anchor links

For an example of how this works, try searching for "nuclear fusion." As you can see, Google pulls out the headings in the article, so if I was really interested in the requirements for nuclear fusion, I could jump straight there. This is a great addition and really helps in cases where you are dealing with long, text-heavy pages.
If you are a Webmaster and want to set up your Web pages to identify sections to Google, then read this post on Google's Webmaster Central to get you started.
What's obejctionable here is that the entire context for the story *should* have been "Google plays catch-up with Bing features" and a comparison of the implementation on Bing vs. Google. Instead, we get tripe like "This is right in line with Google's mission of helping users to find the information that they are looking for as quickly and accurately as possible."
So it not only doesn't acknowledge Bing but makes it seem like Google is the innovator in this feature, because after all that's it's mission. So not only is it slightly inaccurate, it's in fact the *opposite* of the truth. That's what makes it especially objectionable. It's Bing that is being the innovator here with it's mission to go "beyond 10 blue links".
Because everyone was talking so good about Bing, I thought I would check it out again. I proceeded to recieve an error on the main Bing page. Here's my screenshot. I selected the text on the screen, so that you can see the error messages that were posted. I've never seen an error message on Google ever.

HP is changing its Voodoo tune

After purchasing the gaming and PC enthusiast brand in 2006, HP in 2008 began using the Voodoo name beyond powerful gaming PCs. It painted the name Voodoo and VoodooDNA on high-end HP notebooks and desktops, and talked up their premium engineering and design. They used the analogy that if the HP brand were a Smart Car and Compaq were a Chrysler, Voodoo would be their Maybach.
But a year later, HP's consumer PC lineup contains little trace of the Voodoo branding. HP had introduced the HP Blackbird with VoodooDNA and more recently HP Firebird with Voodoo DNA. Both are nowhere to be found on HP.com. In a more recent example, a new notebook, called the HP Envy was released last week. A year ago it was called the HP Voodoo Envy 133. Though the updated model takes some Voodoo ideas like the thin profile, quick booting, the power adapter, and packaging, you'd have to be a Voodoo fanboy to know Voodoo had any sort of influence at all on it.
So what gives? It seems the Voodoo team didn't have much to do with the Envy, despite its sharing the same name with older products. In the same post, Sood that Voodoo is "transitioning from 'desktop and notebook' manufacturing to something beyond." While it's unclear what "something beyond" means, he hints that besides HP taking some design and engineering cues from Voodoo that the company he founded didn't quite fit into HP the way Sood had initially expected.
HP representatives, when asked for clarification, said there's no reason for concern: their Voodoo plans haven't changed, even though a few Voodoo computers seem to have disappeared from their product line. HP says they were limited edition designs.
Essentially the high-end products that the Voodoo name gets attached to are harder to scale at the manufacturing capacity that is normal for HP products. But when pressed on the lack of any recent Voodoo and HP co-branding, HP said we can "expect to see the Voodoo and VoodooDNA products come out at about the same pace as they have since the acquisition." If the three-year history of the deal is a guide, it looks like that means once every year or two.
That may be disappointing to some. But it was clear from the beginning that the acquisition of Voodoo by HP was for high-end cachet, not big gobs of customers. Voodoo was a Calgary, Canada boutique PC maker turning out custom gaming machines. Each computer was built by hand for enthusiasts willing to pay for machines that sometimes started at $5,000 each.

Intel brings Nehalem to notebooks

Officially launched at the Intel Developer Forum here Wednesday morning, the chip is initially available in two standard and one Extreme Edition versions. Formerly known as Clarksfield, the quad-core chip combines Intel's Turbo Boost and Hyperthreading technologies.
"It's a 2GHz chip, but with Turbo Boost it can go up to 3.2GHz," said Mooly Eden, vice president and general manager of Intel's PC Client Group. Turbo Boost works by switching off cores when not in use and overclocking the active cores left. "Clarksfield is the best quad-, dual-, and single-core chip," said Eden. The chips run at 45 watts, 55 watts for the Extreme Edition, and have an integrated memory controller--the first Intel mobile chips in this lower cost, higher performance configuration.
He also said that Intel was working on new security features for laptops. "Working with LoJack and available next year," he said, "we'll have new capabilities that let you send a message to a lost or stolen computer. If you're nice, you can say 'Please return my computer.' Some say 'The data is shredded, and so are you.'" Intel also unveiled Light Peak, a new optical fiber interconnection technology that it hopes will eventually replace most or all of the current cabling that computer and mobile users have to deal with.
Dadi Perlmutter, newly promoted general manager of the Intel Architecture Group in charge of processors, said next year would see the Westmere 32nm designs in laptops, with the Arrandale processor adding on-chip graphics for another boost in performance and better power savings.
Running at 10Gbps--enough to transfer a Blu-ray movie in under 30 seconds--and with a maximum reach of 100 meters, Light Peak is designed to carry high-definition video, networking traffic, and high volumes of other data at the same time. Capable of scaling up to 100Gbps, Intel says it is planning to have components ready for manufacturers in 2010.

Netbooks New Mini-SATA Interface

The SATA International Organization (SATA-IO) is planning to introduce the latest SATA connector at the Intel Developers Forum (IDF). The new platform, named mini-SATA (mSATA), is roughly the size of a business card and is similar in size to the PCI Express Controller.
Primarily aimed at manufacturers, the mSATA connector was designed for smaller storage solutions, such as 32 to 64GB and meant to supplement primary storage. The folks at SATA-IO anticipate that the new module will allow systems makers to provide more creative storage solutions such as dedicated OS or application drives.
Toshiba and SanDisk also announced they would be debuting mSATA modules in various storage sizes at their booths at IDF. Overall, the new platform will create smaller netbooks and mobile products and "Smaller is always better,” says Steve Duplessi, tech analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group.
Confused by terms like SATA II, SATA Gen 2, and SATA 3Gb/s? You're not alone. With today's release (link in PDF format) of the PHY (physical layer) portion of the forthcoming SATA revision 3.0 specification (details here), SATA-IO, the trade association responsible for defining Serial ATA specifications, is trying hard to stomp out the many misidentifications of SATA specifications and features over the years.
SATA revision 3.0 doubles the speed of the current 3Gb/s version, reaching transfer speeds of 6Gb/s. So, what should you call the newest member of the SATA specifications family? According to the SATA Naming Guidelines, here's what to do:
The first reference in a document should read: "Serial ATA International Organization: Serial ATA Revision 3.0." Additional references can be to either "SATA Revision 3.0" or "SATA 6Gb/s."
SATA-IO is also serious about cleaning up the confusion surrounding current technologies and products as well:
Don't use "SATA I" or "Gen 1": instead, use "SATA Revision 1.x" or "SATA first generation" or "SATA 1.5Gb/s."
Likewise, "SATA II" or "SATA Gen 2" are also on the "don't talk that way" list, replaced by "SATA Revision 2.x" or "SATA second generation" or "SATA 3.0Gb/s."

Lenovo's Netbook-Killer Desktop, the C100

While netbooks are getting all the attention these days, Lenovo thinks the desktop can get a piece of that small-form-factor low cost action. They released the C100 all-in-one widescreen desktop computer starting at $399.
The Lenovo C100 features an 18.5in (16:9) flat-panel driven by the Intel GMA 950 chipset. They packed in 160GB hard drive and 1GB of RAM all powered by the Intel Atom 330 dual-core processor. It also rocks four USB ports, integrated DVD burner, webcam, speakers and a microphone crammed into a 2-inch deep profile, rivaling some LCD monitors.

Intel talks Linux, Netbooks

There are certain operating-system vendors who take Moblin completely as is and use it, and add customization and provide support, and there are those who take various technologies from Moblin and incorporate them into their own operating systems--although, when people do that, they tend to focus on the user experience.
When you hear, for example, Novell is taking Moblin or Ubuntu is doing Ubuntu Moblin, they are using the operating-system infrastructure and taking the Moblin user experience, which is a set of applications--the 3D infrastructure and a set of libraries, infrastructure components like the social networking, media management, and so on. Essentially, from a technical standpoint, you end up with the same thing, but for the OS vendors it is sometimes easier to use a distribution system that they already use. We made it easy for them to use that.
It's still in beta--right now we're in the very final phase. Very minor but critical bug fixes are being done based on input from OEMs and OS vendors. We don't want to call it a release until someone actually ships a product with it.
"This is a bit of self-criticism of what we've done in Linux over the past years--we in Linux have got to stop writing clones of the OSs from 15 years ago." The final version will be available for download over the next couple of weeks. Once that happens, we will go on a regular cadence of a release every six months...to make it easy for people to be able to have predictability in terms of time schedules.
There are a lot of things that we've done with Moblin that are fairly cutting-edge, such as social-networking integration. We created the infrastructure that lets you very easily integrate streams from all the social networks with simple (application programming interfaces) and then be able to allow the user, in an integrated way, to update their status and so on. Moblin also boots in five seconds. It's things like this--we look at things from a user experience perspective, then we build all the plumbing, such as the kernel and adding libraries and 3D infrastructure.
This is a bit of self-criticism of what we've done in Linux over the past years--we in Linux have got to stop writing clones of the OSs from 15 years ago. People want to use these devices as an Internet-media, social-networking consumption device, and this is what we've focused a great deal on, to provide those capabilities in an easy way to use while at the same time maintaining the traditional PC compatibility and consistency.

Apple hires new general counsel

Bruce Sewell has worked at Intel since 1995--his most recent role as that company's legal chief and a senior vice president. At Intel, Sewell was responsible for managing corporate policies and hundreds of lawyers in more than 30 countries. Sewell will also serve as a senior vice president at Apple.
Sewell is replacing Daniel Cooperman, Apple's current legal head honcho, who is retiring at the end of September. Cooperman served as general counsel for the last two years after replacing Nancy Heinen, who was investigated by the SEC in connection with Apple's stock-option backdating scandal. (Heinen settled with the SEC last year, admitting no guilt.)

Apple revenue accounting rule changed

Apple stands to gain a lot from a new draft of rules that governs how companies recognize revenue from subscriptions, as Fortune noted. Though it still needs final approval from the Financial Accounting Standards Board, the change could mean that Apple will stop recognizing revenue for its highly successful iPhone over a two-year period, the length of a standard wireless contract, and instead recognize it as soon as a phone is sold.
As Apple showed for the first time in October last year, as successful as the company had been with sales of the iPhone, the current accounting practice was obscuring the true wealth the device is actually generating for the company. For the most recent quarter, adherence to GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) meant that Apple reported $8.34 billion in iPhone and Apple TV revenue (assume the iPhone is a large chunk of that number). In reality the company recorded $9.74 billion in revenue.
Now, flash-forward to today, after a summer in which we saw the most successful iPhone launch of the three since 2007, and it's clear that if the revenue from each device were accounted for all at once, the company's overall earnings would be much higher. And, as Apple Vice President and Controller Betsy Rafael wrote while lobbying for the rule change, the company's stock price would likely see significant gains if investors were able to see how much money the company was actually bringing in every quarter.
The reason Apple recognizes revenue from the iPhone over a two-year period stems from an uproar surrounding an upgrade to the MacBook Pro more than two years ago. Apple had secretly sold those laptops with an 802.11n chip but didn't activate it right away. Because the famously secretive Apple kept the existence of a new 802.11n chip under wraps, and because it recognized all of the revenue from the sale of those notebooks at the time they were sold, accounting experts said Apple had to charge a fee to satisfy accounting regulations that require companies to establish a value for product upgrades.
Apple only applies this practice to the iPhone and Apple TV, but not Macs or iPods, and it's the reason why iPod Touch owners have to pay a fee to upgrade to each new iPhone OS software update, whereas iPhone owners do not.

Apple: the Intel Netbook is unstoppable

A typical flow of people passed through the laptop section in the 20 minutes I was there. Toward the end, all of the remaining customers (a few men and women, each) were marveling at all the cute, inexpensive laptops. Cute, inexpensive laptops to them, Netbooks to us in the media who like cut-and-dried categories.
That is circuitous way to get to my point. The Intel Netbook is not going away and is just getting more popular as this marketing research report indicates. Apple's Tim Cook dissed Netbooks back in April for what seemed like acceptable reasons: cheap, "junky hardware" (Cook's words) equates to downmarket, shoddy products. But that Apple reasoning needs an update--the fall 2009 version: a lot of the newer Netbooks coming out now are not shoddy or cheap feeling. (And I am hereby updating my previous pessimistic take on Netbooks too per this post.)
People like cute, light, and cheap--especially in a laptop. This sentiment won't be overcome, as Intel believes, by the emerging ultrathin laptop category, which ranges from about $500 to $1,000 (formerly called CULV or consumer ultra-low-voltage). Certainly not this year. Ultrathins are not different enough in appearance from a standard laptop and not cheap enough. (And recent reports indicate that the ultrathin category is not taking off as expected.)
Intel will never admit in a thousand years that it has created, in the Netbook, a Frankenstein monster of sorts. Intel will, of course, take credit (which it should) for the creation of a new category of computing devices, but my sense is that the company is not head over heels about the Netbook business model--and this is also a reason for Apple's very conscious decision not to make a Netbook. And, as many people are predicting, its reason for pursuing a more upscale tablet-like touch device.
Apple's products and marketing are good but not infallible. And the lack of a Netbook may come back to bite Apple at some point. Maybe not tomorrow. Maybe not next month. But maybe next year. One of the Best Buy customers eying a Netbook made a comment that was a powerful counterpoint to all the Apple Mac-PC ads. To paraphrase: "You have to pay an arm and a leg for Apple (pointing to the Apple corner), I'm trying to make a practical business decision here."

Asetek Launches Liquid Cooling for Intel

Stock cooling is for chumps, but until cooling manufacturers either update their existing coolers with socket 1156 brackets or come out with new products that support the Core i5 platform, you might not have much choice. Enter Asetek, who just launched a liquid cooling system capable of cooling every major Intel socket currently available.
“Asetek’s robust liquid cooling can now easily be configured for any Intel desktop motherboard. A single mounting ring enables flexible manufacturing in both high and low volume PC manufacturing settings,” said Gary Baum, Asetek's SVP of Marketing. "The new retention ring helps our OEM customers reduce inventory costs by providing a single solution to support Intel's entire mix of socket types."
The one-size-fits-all mounting bracket features a single mounting ring and multiple screw inserts so there's no fumbling around the box to find the correct part. No word yet on price or availability, but if past products are any indication, expect to see Asetek's new liquid cooler used primarily in OEM systems.

Dell Slices Air with 9.9mm Adamo

Dell launched a teaser site for the newest revision of the Adamo series of laptops, Adamo XPS. The site features little more than a picture of the ultra-thin device and the tag line reading “Crafted to fall in love with at 9.99MM.”
Let’s take a second to do the math: at 9.99MM the Adamo XPS aims to slice the Macbook Air (19.3mm) in half at their respective thinnest points. A remarkable feet no doubt, but Apple took heavy criticism for the features it removed to make Air the thinnest laptop available at the time. One must be wondering, what could possibly fit into the Adamo?
Dell insists this is merely a “design concept” and is holding out on technical specifications and details until a later date.
When competing in markets like ultra thins and all in ones where there is little to no competition, even prices from dell aren't cheap. Their last Adamo was priced at $1499, the same price that apple recently reduced the Macbook air to. As much as I dislike apple, in this market segment their prices remain competitive, exorbitant, but competitive.

Lithium Battery Recycling become Blossoming Industry

From cars to computers, power tools, cell phones and much more; lithium continues to become one of the preferred battery chemistries used to power many of the machines and gadgets that make our world go ’round.
As the use of lithium becomes more common, and with it being a limited resource, the need for recycling lithium is sure to increase dramatically in the years ahead. Countries without major lithium reserves have already taken notice of this and, as noted in an article on hybridcars.com, we are witnessing the birth of the lithium recycling industry right before our eyes.
News of these latest corporations throwing their hats in the lithium recycling ring follows the recent announcment that America’s first recycling facility for lithium-ion vehicle batteries is on it’s way. While industry analysts believe that we are a decade or more away from needing to recycle nickel or lithium batteries in significant volumes, getting the jump on things now will help to ensure the continued rise of lithium as a major source of battery power.
Nikkei reported yesterday that Japan’s Nippon Mining & Metals Co. and GS Yuasa Corp. each plan to start collecting lithium ion batteries from scrapped electric and hybrid vehicles in order to recycle their lithium. Nippon developed technology that extracts lithium from the batteries, and plans to have its trial plant running as early as 2011. GS Yuasa, a major producer of automotive batteries, will begin collecting used lithium ion batteries from automakers in a few years to further develop its process of recycling based on how much lithium is used in different parts of the batteries.

Leopard Apple's most compatible release

While not everyone is thrilled with the way Apple handled the release, it turns out that Snow Leopard is Apple's most compatible operating system release ever. According to sources familiar with Snow Leopard's internal testing process, Apple kept an enormous amount of statistics on third-party application compatibility.
They said that Apple not only tracked many of the most widely-used apps, they tracked many of the shareware apps, as well. If an application exhibited problems, the developers were notified of the incompatibility and were offered help to make it Snow Leopard-compliant.
It's true that Apple did not offer a public beta of Snow Leopard, but it did expand the seed program with this release. Some large and small businesses, as well as individuals were included in the beta program for Snow Leopard. Of course, developers have access to the code through Apple's Developer Program, to test their apps through the entire process.
Apple began working with developers in June 2008, according to my source. This gave developers the maximum amount of time to check their apps against the new operating system. While complete data was not available for this story, anecdotal evidence suggests that upgrade problems with Snow Leopard are not widespread.

President of the Google's Greater China, Kai-Fu Lee is leaving google

Kai-Fu Lee, president of the Google's Greater China operation and the subject of a bitter employee custody battle between Google and Microsoft, will leave the search giant later this month.
Lee, who left Microsoft in 2005 to take over Google's operations in China, is resigning from the company to start his own venture and will be succeeded by a Google employee, the company confirmed Thursday evening. Lee's departure was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.
"With a very strong leadership team in place, it seemed a very good moment for me to move to the next chapter in my career," Lee said in a statement announcing his departure.
An expert in speech recognition technology, Lee founded Microsoft's China research lab in the late 1990s and worked at Silicon Graphics and Apple before joining Microsoft. Before joining Google, Lee had been working at Microsoft's Redmond, Wash., headquarters, focusing on new search technologies.
Google announced in July 2005 that it was hiring Lee, and Microsoft immediately filed suit in Washington state court against Lee and Google, arguing that Lee was violating a one-year noncompete agreement that was part of his Microsoft contract. Google later countersued in California court. Microsoft settled with Google in December 2005, without releasing terms of the pact.
