Dell's Della site causes facepalmage

Oh, Dell, did you start up a firestorm. Sure, your idea was great: create a site marketing your Netbooks to women. But instead of telling non-tech-savvy women what they can do with their laptops--download recipes!--you ended up offending the tech-savvy ladies, who, you know, are the ones who have actually bought your computers.
I have several friends who are women (no, really!). I showed the site to several of them and the feedback was completely negative. One of my friends actually said she now feels bad about the Dell Netbook she bought just two months ago.
You see, computers are computers are computers. They are gender-neutral. Your ads should be too. The good news is you listened to consumer feedback over the past few days. Gone from the Della site are the tacky 1950s-style housewifeisms and the "shoe shopping" stuff. They've been replaced by more appropriate language.
If pink offends you, then simply go to dell.com. As for the woman who baught an HP server because her female sensitivities were offended by pink, hope she can justify that waste of money. Maybe she is employed by the governemnt where that kind of thing is accepted. Not in the real world.

Guide on Blue laptop Screen of Death

Picture this: It’s late at night, you’re sitting at your computer playing a game or working on a project when, suddenly, Windows freezes completely. All your work is gone, and you find a blue screen full of gibberish staring back at you. Windows is dead, Jim, at least until you reboot it. You have no choice but to sigh loudly, shake your fist at Bill Gates and angrily push the reset button. You’ve just been visited by the ghost of windows crashed: the Blue Screen of Death. So that all you can do?
No, calm down, you can solve this, here, I'll tell you how to do. There are many parts to a BSOD, but the most important is right at the top. The actual name of the error is presented in all caps with an underscore between each word. In some cases this will be all that’s needed to get to the root of the problem (thanks to the handy guide you are about to read). Most of the time, however, more information will be required.
Nearly every BSOD includes a portion of text with some basic troubleshooting advice, the first of which recommends restarting your computer. Gee, thanks for the tip Microsoft. Before you restart, copy the exact all-caps error code and hexadecimal values shown above and below this portion of generic text. The next paragraph provides sound advice, alerting the user to check to make sure their hardware is installed properly, or to undo any recent software or hardware upgrades.
Every BSOD is accompanied by a memory dump. What this means is when Windows crashes, it dumps whatever it is holding in system memory to a file, and saves the file on your hard drive for debugging purposes. If you contact Microsoft for technical assistance, they’ll want to know the contents of this file.
The “technical information” section portion contains the actual Windows stop code, in oh-so-easy-to-read hexadecimal form. Despite appearing unintelligible at first glance, this combination of numbers and letters is instrumental in determining the cause of the crash. Pay particular attention to the first set of numbers and letters. It precedes the other four, which are enclosed in parenthesis. If a specific driver is associated with the crash, it will be listed on the very next line.

Rumor: Apple rejects 'Jesus Face' iPhone app

An iPhone app called "Me So Holy," that allowed you take a face shot and insert it into a portrait of Jesus or some other religious figure, has been rejected by Apple's tasterati. Apple seems to have rejected the app with the same arguments it used to initially reject the Nine Inch Nails app update.

Section 3.3.12 in the iPhone agreement states: "Applications must not contain any obscene, pornographic, offensive or defamatory content or materials of any kind (text, graphics, images, photographs, etc.), or other content or materials that in Apple's reasonable judgment may be found objectionable by iPhone or iPod touch users."

He added: "We feel that Apple is being too sensitive to its perceived user group and are disappointed that this otherwise creative, freethinking company would reject such a positive and fun application. The message to developers is that they should think inside the box, rather than outside it.

Kudos to the iphone folks! No one should insinuate they are even remotely on par with any religious figures. It is just obscene. The kids that developed this should really look at their motives, might also want to pray a bit before they release new apps just to see if they pass the tasteless test if nothing else.

New TV hard sell, Microsoft strikes at Apple's art

The latest Laptop Hunter TV spot from Microsoft is the very definition of a hard sell. No, not because it barks at you to buy a PC or you'll miss out on the deal of the century (even though you will, you will), but because it goes after the fearless foot soldiers of the Apple army--artists.

Sheila is a filmmaker. She wants something with a fast processor and a big screen. She also wants something that will be able to cut video. And all this for less than $2,000. However, this is a commercial and she's a little too dressy. If she'd been wearing jeans with a thousand coffee stains, a Black Sabbath T-shirt covered in croissant crumbs, and fingernails bitten to the wrist, she would have delivered the authentic film-editing look.

As is customary in this campaign, the script-free script calls for the protagonist to dismiss a Mac. Sheila looks at us and tells us the only Mac in her budget has a mere 2GB. Not enough for all the footage she intends to shoot for her L.A. version of "Gone With the Wind"--provisionally entitled "Gone to Bikram Yoga." Yet, one can't help feel as if Sheila's essential niceness suggests Microsoft has become a little tired of the more robust style epitomized by the first two hunters, Lauren and Giampaolo. Perhaps, despite the current worldwide charge toward saving money, people still want wit and charm to balance the dry drag of their daily lives.

Actaully, what they are saying is that Macs are a computers of choice for the tragically hip and insuferable elite. It doesn't matter if that is true or not because the American culture has a significant anti-elitist undercurrent to it. They may be able to get a lot of traction by appeal to that sentiment. Its why you see presidential candidates bowling, drinking shots, and downplaying their connections with the elites.

Many Series of Samsung LCD Displays Come with Built-In TV Tuner

Samsung today announces three new LCD displays as part of its 70 Series family, the P2070, P3270, and P2370HD. The first two rock a 30mm (1.18-inch) slim form factor, while the HD model checks in a little thicker at 65.5mm (2.58 inches.).
"The 70 Series offers our customers a sophisticated-looking LCD monitor with the performance capability of our televisions," said J.H. Kim, President of Samsung Electronics America's Information Technology Division. "The 70 Series is the new standard as more people upgrade their monitors for additional uses, like watching television programs and playing video games."
Power users will be most interested in the P2370HD, which boasts full 1080p HD (1920x1080) and comes with a built-in HDTV tuner, integrated speakers with SRS TruSurround, and a remote control. Other specs include a 5ms GTG response time, 50,000:1 contrast ration, and HDMI and component inputs.
For the P2370, the price is around RM869 or USD241 approximately. I must say this thing is brilliant. It's very slim and looks cool. There's light emitting and the whole transparent thing is blue lighted.

Dell Will Release an Android Netbook

While no word had been shared about the potential of an Android netbook from Dell, a hastily released press release from a company called Bsquare has gone ahead and confirmed it. While the existence of an Android based netbook has been confirmed, no additional details have been released.
The leading software solutions provider to the global embedded device community, today announced it is porting Adobe’s Flash Lite 3.17 technology onto Dell Netbooks running Google’s Android platform. Netbook and Nettop computers offer the functionality and efficiency of traditional laptops, but with lighter weight and better portability. Research firm Gartner estimates that worldwide shipments of netbooks will increase by 50 percent to 7.8 million units in 2009, while overall computer sales are expected to decline. Industry analysts also predict that Android will gain traction on smart devices, such as the ultra-portable Dell Mini Inspiron 910, which are used in a range of industries.
“Integrating Adobe Flash technology with the functionality of Google’s Android platform on the full range of Netbook devices will allow our OEM customers to meet the high expectations their customers have of this new industry segment,” said Bsquare’s CEO Brian Crowley. “As the Netbook and Nettop market segments expand, our Adobe Flash Lite port to Android is just one of the software products we will offer our OEM and ODM customers.”
In the last 12 months since its acquisition of NEC America’s Adobe Flash Technology Consulting and Distribution business, Bsquare has worked on over 40 different customer devices including handsets, set top boxes, digital signage, consumer devices and netbooks. Bsquare has built an Android competency in its professional engineering services group through customer engagements and by hiring top talent in the field.
Laptops are getting smaller and smaller which is pushing all the major manufacterors to look at powersaving and efficent components. Sure it is all fine, but is it getting us anywhere?

Will Dell Android Netbook be the next Software developer goal?

Mobile software developer Bsquare announced Wednesday that it will port Adobe Flash Lite to Dell's Inspiron Mini 9 Netbook. One problem: Dell has yet to announce any Android Netbooks in its arsenal.
The Bsquare press release issued Wednesday morning trumpets how Dell "Leverages Bsquare's Android competency to improve the Adobe Flash Lite experience on Dell's Mini Inspiron 910." But when contacted for more information about this Android-bearing Mini 9, a Dell representative said repeatedly that "Dell does not make an Android Netbook." The Bsquare press release "erroneously mentioned Dell's name" and is being recalled, Dell said.
There's obviously something more than random error involved here. It's not as though there was a list of companies Bsquare was bragging about working with. The subject of the press release was Dell.
So even though Dell doesn't want to talk about it, this is a pretty good indication that an Android Netbook is close to being announced. It has been rumored for a few months that they've been testing Google's mobile operating system down there in Round Rock, Texas, for the oft-discussed-but-not-officially-announced smartphone. So while it wouldn't be surprising for Dell to make Android available as an option on a Netbook, it would be surprising if they were first. Dell has a habit of sitting back and watching technology trends play out a bit before embracing them.
Other major Netbook makers have also been rumored to be testing Android. HP is apparently looking at it, as are Asus and Acer. But the first company officially linked to putting Android on a Netbook is China's Guangzhou Skytone Transmission Technologies, which said last week it will release a product for $250 in the next three months.
Then what do you think of it? Jyst leave your comment here.

Apple is thinking about adding 3G wireless radios to future MacBooks.

Apple's Mac Hardware Group is looking for a quality-assurance engineer with experience in the various networking technologies popular in the personal computing market, such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, "and/or 3G Wireless WAN," according to the job posting spotted by Computerworld. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet are the standard network interfaces on the Mac at the moment, while 3G Wireless WAN is a technology confined just to the iPhone inside Apple.
A few years ago, notebooks with embedded chips that could connect to cellular networks were thought to be the next big thing in mobile computing, but the concept didn't exactly pan out in the same way that Wi-Fi is now ubiquitous in notebook computing. But Apple may be considering a MacBook partnership with AT&T, given its close ties to the carrier through the iPhone.
Rumors to that effect have surfaced before, and it might make sense that Apple would want to have some sort of tweak available for its MacBook lineup heading into the second half of the year.
As both an AAPL and MSFT shareholder and user of both companies' products and services, I will point out that Apple has the highest customer satisfaction rating in the industry. Also, Apple's stock performance over the past five years stomps all over Microsoft's tepid meandering.
It is not only the cost of the chipset, but also the cost of the service. I know a lot of people who balk at the cost of the service, but most of the people that I have known that have gotten the service have kept with it. Despite all the hype about Wifi, the reality is that it is pretty easy to find places where there are no public hotspots or in some cases there are no hotspots at all. With a data card you can get access virually anywhere where the provider has coverage and in most major metro areas you will get pretty good 3G coverage. For people who do a lot of business outside of an office the cost of a data card isn't so bad.
The big thing is that a lot of people don't really travel much so they wouldn't get much use out of the a data card. I know a lot of people where the only reason they bought a laptop instead of a desktop is merely to be able to have their computer in any room in their house that they want at the moment. Except for an occasional vacation they don't really take it anywhere.

Desktop is a new experimental Firefox extension

Similar to what Opera, Chrome, and Safari offer with their bookmark start pages, Desktop shows you a live preview of each of your bookmarked pages, and takes you to each site whenever you click on that thumbnail. The big difference is, you get complete control over that layout in a way that resembles moving files around on your computer's desktop.
To begin building your start page, the extension requires that you go through and manually pick out the sites you want to see. This process can be a bit of a pain, as it only slurps up the bookmarks in your bookmarks toolbar, and not your bookmarks menu. You can, however, enter in any URL you want. Desktop gives you thumbnail previews of your favorite sites. You can rearrange and create new ones freely.
Users looking for a bit more customization can add a background image from their hard drive, and create sub-folders that let you drill down to another screen full of bookmarks. It remembers the positioning of each of your bookmarks, and shows it in the preview. The only bummer is that you can't name these sub-folders, so you have to be smart about what bookmarks you add to make them easy to remember.
This extension is still an early effort, but it's got definite promise. As much as a I love personalized start pages like Netvibes, iGoogle, and My Yahoo, there's something nice about keeping that page of bookmarks local, so it will always work without requiring you to be logged in somewhere.
As long as the plugin respects privacy. The NoScript fiasco has definately left me sour to plugins in general, and I was a major supporter. At least, it was found and fixed, but hopefully others will learn from that mistake.

Windows 7 will be ready a bit early by Acer

On Thursday Acer UK marketing director Bobby Watkins told tech blog Pocket-lint.com to expect the new operating system by fall:
"23rd October is the date the Windows 7 will be available. There is a 30 day upgrade time so that customers don't wait to buy a new computer, so if you buy during that 30 day period, you'll get a free upgrade to Windows 7," Watkins is quoted as saying.
That's also the day Acer will release its Z5600 PC, an all-in-one desktop built specifically around Windows 7 features.
Microsoft has previously stated that the final version of Windows 7 won't be ready until January 2010. The first release candidate of the new operating system will be available Thursday to some developers and to the public next week.
With things going as well as they have for Microsoft, I thought we would have Windows 7 BEFORE the new school year. Now kids buying laptops will have to choose between Vista with the option to upgrade sometime in the future and a Mac. This is a missed opportunity.
