Apple sued HTC for patent infringement

According to GIzmodo (though not yet confirmed), two of the patents are related to power management, two are for personalized phone dialers, and one is for a dialer with special memory access. Apple threw everything they had at HTC, and by comparison this is small potatoes. It could be HTC is attempting to extract a cross-licensing deal from Apple, or just get them to call it a day.

Long story short, it looked a little grim for the relatively young HTC, though it will still likely take years for the case to run its course. But now HTC is coming out swinging, and has filed a complaint with the International Trade Commission (ITC) against Apple for infringing five of their patents. HTC has asked the ITC to ban imports of the iPhone, iPad , and iPod Touch. This is a common request in these cases.

You may remember a few months back when Apple sued HTC for patent infringement. The case centered mostly around HTC's Android phones. No corresponding federal lawsuit has been filed as of yet, but that could be coming too. We'll keep an eye on this one folks.

I'm glad to see Apple getting a taste of it's own lawyer prescribed medicine, even if it's on the small scale. At least this complaint can't be dismissed like Xerox was in Apple vs Microsoft & HP because of stature of limitations. If HTC can get some sort of settlement with Apple from this it'd be wonderful.

NEC claims their new video identification system can succeed

The NEC detection system works by creating a digital fingerprint from the original content. The files are 76 bytes in size per frame, making storage of many fingerprints doable. The system can work with scenes as short as two seconds; say goodbye to fair use. NEC is also claiming it can detect content that has been altered by converting it from digital to analog, or filming in a theater. It is unclear if a video can be manipulated sufficiently to evade the filter.

First of all, there is no such thing as "uncrackable" DRM. Another thing; how can they be happy with a 96% detection rate?! What about the other 4% that paid for the goddamn movie that won't be able to watch it because of this DRM?

The only thing DRM ever does is fuck over the customers that actually pay for the stuff, and the pirates always find their way around DRM anyway. The companies that do DRM are only wasting their money and driving away the good paying customers by turning them into pirates. The technology is on its way to being integrated into the upcoming MPEG-7 media standard. We'll be interested to see if NEC is promising more than it can deliver here. It sounds like Star Trek level tech to us.

Automated technology to detect pirated content has been tried before, but the results are usually a mess of false positives and misses. NEC claims their new video identification system can succeed where the others have failed. According to NEC, the technology has a detection rate of 96% and a suspiciously good false positive rate of 1 in 5 million.

MSI wants to describe its new CX705MX

The CX705MX also incorporates MSI's ECO Engine Power saving technology, which lets user choose from one of five power management levels, including video game, film, presentation, word processing, and turbo.

Other hardware consists of an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 250GB/320GB/500GB hard drive, 4-in-1 memory card reader, HDMI output, three USB ports, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, 1.3MP webcam, and Windows 7 Home Premium. We're not so sure a 17.3-inch chassis qualifies as a "supersized" notebook, but if that's how MSI wants to describe its new CX705MX, then so be it.

MSI won't get any argument from us over the ATI Radeon HD 545V discrete graphics solution shoved inside. This should give the mostly entry-level notebook enough muscle to push HD videos on the 1600x900 resolution panel, which is accompanied by a pair of 2W speakers and a subwoofer.

Cheap laptop the everyday man can afford while making 10 bucks an hour! And I don't have to watch my fiend play his xbox360 every time I go over his house, I just boot this baby up and start up a game of resident evil 5 or another game I feel like! So I am really happy with MSI products! Never had a MSI fail yet. And there cooling solutions are the best.

Sony suddenly wants to cash in on all the the third-party extended warranties

Of course it's all going to come down to pricing, and Sony's is fairly competitive. For a barebones extension, Sony will charge $50 to bump up warranty service on its PS3 console from one year to two years, or $60 for three years of coverage. The PSP console will run $30 for two years or $40 for three years. And the accidental damage insurance? That's another $40.

You can't check out of a Best Buy or other retail electronics chain without a sales associate pushing for an extended warranty. Even Toys R Us will try to up sell you on additional coverage, but if Sony has its way, you'll go through them for longer warranties when shopping a PlayStation 3 or PlayStation Portable (PSP) console.

It appears Sony suddenly wants to cash in on all the the third-party extended warranties being sold at the retail level, and perhaps cut into those offered by services like SquareTrade. Helping to do that, Sony will offer additional accidental damage coverage, so should you fall down a flight of stairs and land on your PS3 to soften your blow, you're covered.

What do you think about Sony's pricing? Do you usually buy an extended warranty when purchasing electronics? Tell us in the comments section below.

Sony has been struggling with declining TV sales

All three companies have something to gain from such an arrangement. If the product is successful, they may be able to win back market share lost to Samsung and LG in recent years. Google would love to be able to deliver their services to a new generation of connected TVs and Blu-ray players.

TV manufacturers are working to integrate services with connected units, and this partnership could be a big step in that direction. No word on exactly what Google software these sets would be running, but some specialized build of Android seems like a possibility. Would you interested in this product?

Certainly Intel has the lion's share of the PC market, but owning a new one is never a bad thing. There are also rumors that Logitech is working on a wireless keyboard/remote system. The trio of companies may be unveiling the new devices at a conference on May 19-20. Could this be the real product behind the Google TV rumors last month?

Sony has been struggling with declining TV sales over the last few months. Now sources have indicated the Japanese company will be stepping up their game by releasing TVs with Intel chips and running Google software. I think this is a good idea. I think Sony having a low powered Intel chip with Google software running on it will be great. Logitech creating a remote will be awesome too.

Intel hasn't officially launched its new Atom N455 and N475 processors

According to the spec sheet, the new model is largely unchanged from the original NB305, save for the faster processor (1.66GHz) and 1GB of DDR3 RAM.

Intel hasn't officially launched its new Atom N455 and N475 processors, but that hasn't stopped some eager vendors from letting the cat out of the bag. One of those is Toshiba Japan, which earlier today posted a product page for the new NB305-10F netbook before quickly pulling it offline.

Over at Amazon Germany, the same processor is being flaunted in a couple of new HP Mini 210 netbooks available in black or silver. The 10.1-inch machines are slated to arrive in 3-4 weeks and boast the same Atom N455 processor as the above Toshiba, 1GB of DDR3 memory, Intel GMA 3150 graphics, and a 250GB hard drive.

There’s very little to differentiate one netbook from another these days. Manufacturers are basically just putting different enclosures around the same hardware. That’s largely a result of restrictions placed on netbook specs by Intel and Microsoft. With the upcoming Atom N470.

Asus will release its Eee Pad tablet

Asus is also working with Google to weave its Android platform into the Eee Pad. The benefit here is users will have access to an ever-increasing marketplace, which will prove critical in going up against the iPad. The Eee Pad will also include at least one USB port, an integrated webcam, and Adobe Flash support, Shih noted.

No word yet on how much it will cost, but early estimates put the price tag at around $480 to $510 when bundled with telecom carrier services. I'm assuming the actual tablet won't look like the picture above because that looks like it's just a cropped picture of an ASUS netbook's screen. Anyhow, I'll only consider this over the iPad if it's capactivie touchscreen and made of scratch-resistant glass like the iPad's.

The tablet wars are going to heat up this summer, and Asus will be right there on the battlefield going up against Apple, HP, and everyone else pushing for a 2010 release. For Asus, July is the month to mark on the calendar, which is when the company will release its Eee Pad tablet, according to company chairman Jerry Shih.

Now that the whole world knows what Apple's iPad brings to the fight, Asus has been busy equipping its Eee Pad with a few weapons the company hopes will give it a clear advantage. Chief among them is Nvidia's Tegra 2 chipset, which should open the door to some impressive 3D graphics and gaming.

Dual Core Netbooks review

Should Intel go through with this, it would be a win for everyone involved. Intel's partners have long wanted to sell dual-core netbooks, primarily because consumers would love to have one, so long as battery life doesn't take a major hit. And for Intel, injecting a bit of performance into a form factor that badly needs it could go a long way in preventing a flurry of would-be netbook buyers from jumping ship and swimming over to tablet island.

There aren't a whole lot of details about the chip, but apparently it will haven a 10W TDP, up slightly from the 7W and 8W single-core Atoms found in current netbooks. The dual-core part will probably come clocked a little slower than today's single-core chips, a trade off we suspect most will be more than willing to make.

Not just yet, mind you, but later this year. Word on the Web is that Intel plans to release a dual-core Atom designed for netbooks sometime in the second half of 2010, and probably in the fourth quarter.

It might soon be time to take that netbook of yours out behind the shed and put it out of your misery. Or better yet, sell it on Ebay. That way you can use the funds to replace it with a dual-core netbook and do a little more than just basic computing tasks.

Your next Vaio laptop will be built by Sony

All laptops will still carry Sony branding, as well as have the "taste of Vaio [and] the style of Vaio." Sony will have to approve all third party designs, which Akahane ensures will be just as reliable as division one laptops.

Don't assume that your next Vaio laptop will be built by Sony. In an interview with PC Pro, Ryosuke Akahane, deputy president of Sony Vaio's Business Group, announced a two-tier strategy for the company's laptop division. According to Akahane, Sony will continue to design and built Vaio laptops designed as "division one," while "division two" will be build by the company's partners.

"The quality criteria itself is no different between division number one and division number two," Akahane explained. So why the change? Put simply, the company wants to sell more laptops. Ten million to be exact, which is the goal Akhane laid out for 2010.

New Virus Extort Cash with Porn-laden Web History

The website the history is published on is owned by a shell company known to be associated with other malware scams. Security experts warn that paying the ransom is unlikely to result in the removal of the information. It's more probable that the malware makers will just sell the card number. Over 5500 users have admitted to being infected. Might be a good time to update your antivirus, in case Kenzero variants spread.

Users of the Japanese file-sharing service Winny are grappling with a new threat today. Trend Micro is tracking a trojan called Kenzero that steals a user's web history and posts it online until such time as the user pays up. The virus is masquerading as illegal copies of explicit Hentai games, assuring the affected individuals likely have at least some embarrassing items in their browser history.

The virus appears to be a game installation screen that requests the personal details of the user. It then posts the web history along with the personally identifiable information. Users are confronted with an email or popup demanding 1500 yen (about $16) to "settle your violation of copyright law" and remove the stolen information from the website.

I mean everyone has at least looked at porn once at least by accident. It's like the thing about masturbation. Everyone does it but nobody is willing to admit they do it. They almost always lie about it. Who cares. If I look at porn thats my business. Why would I be worried about what others think. It's all sex and we all do it.

Lenovo Release Skylight Smartbook

Apple sold over 300,000 iPads at launch (including pre-orders), but more importantly, the Cupertino company officially kicked off the era of tablet computing. That doesn't leave smartbooks in a very good position, which quite frankly weren't in a great position to begin with.

Lenovo first announced its Skylight device back in January and said it would ship in April, but that was before anyone outside of Apple had any kind of inkling as to when the iPad would ship. And if the timing's bad now for smartbooks, it's not going to get much better. HP's highly anticipated Slate is just around the corner, and you can bet everyone else will be looking to cash in on this emerging market, just like OEMs did when netbooks started coming into their own.

The tablet may have just claimed its first victim, though it's a bit early to tell for sure. What we do know is that Lenovo has decided to the delay the launch of its Skylight smartbook by at least three months, which leaves us to speculate on where the market is headed.

Now everyone here thats been here a while will try and remember back in the day when Netbooks first started out I was the one pointing out how great it would be if someone would start producing a convertable laptop to be used as a tablet because I knew a tablet would be awesome to have.

Apple Acknowledges iPad Wi-Fi Headaches

If this applies to you, Apple suggests creating separate Wi-Fi network names to identify each band, which you can do by appending characters to the current network name. Failing that, be sure that both networks use the same security type (WEP, WPA, WPA2, etc). Failing both of those, Apple says to try resetting your network settings using Settings > Genera l> Reset > Reset Network Settings.

Since the iPad's release over the weekend, some users have started complaining that the integrated Wi-Fi is busted. Reported problems run the gamut from not being able to connect to their network after bringing the iPad out of sleep mode, to not being able to get a signal unless standing right next to the router. And of course there are the usual complaints of dropped signals that seem to accompany nearly every Wi-Fi enabled device.

According to Apple, there are a couple of things you can try if you're experiencing wonky Wi-Fi support. The problem, says Apple, is that under certain conditions, the iPad may have trouble rejoining a known network after restart or waking from sleep. These specific conditions include using the same network name for each network and/or using different security settings for each network.

And the wireless signal needs to travel through Apple certified atmosphere, otherwise using the "mother nature" supplied stuff can cause interferance!

Asus Launches Core i3 Notebook, review and information

Other features include 4GB of DDR3-1066 memory, 320GB hard drive, DVD burner, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, 0.3MP webcam, HDMI port, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, and an 8-cell battery. Fire up a game, for example, and the discrete graphics will kick in, but will take a back seat to the integrated solution when you're composing an email.

Asus today launched what it describes as a "strikingly stylish" 13.3-inch notebook, the U30Jc. The thin and light laptop is the world's first notebook to pair Intel's Core i3 processor with Nvidia's Optimus technology for a "perfect blend of performance and power management."

Nvidia's Optimus architecture plays a big role in the above mentioned blend, which stretches battery life by intelligently switching back and forth between the integrated Intel GMA chipset and Nvidia's GeForce GT310M discrete graphics.

According to Nvidia, 2010 will be a big year for notebook graphics, and more specifically, for Optimus-enabled notebooks. By the middle of 2010, Nvidia says you can expect some 50 laptops to support the company's Optimus technology.

In case you missed our previous coverage, Nvidia's Optimus technology gives mobile warriors the best of both worlds: battery life and discrete graphics. It's a sort of hybrid solution in which Optimus determines how much GPU power is needed for a particular task and then routes the process either to Nvidia's discrete GPU or Intel's integrated graphics. And no special drivers are needed, just an Intel chipset.

HP has been working on flexible displays for some time

HP claims that despite it's inherent flexibility, the future of the technology lies in making screens smaller and lighter than they are today. Anyone who has ever shoved a phone in their pocket would probably agree that a screen the consistency of paper is probably a bad idea, and we can't wait until more details are announced. Until then you'll just have to amuse yourself with the picture above, and the short video hosted on You Tube which you can check out below.
HP has been working on flexible displays for some time now, but it appears as though they may be a bit further along than we originally thought. The technology is still pretty far from ever being commercialized, but a recent presentation captured by the guys over at Hardware.info shows off one of the early working prototypes being touted around by top execs. They didn't actually show it in action, but the simple fact that you can roll it up gives it some serious geek cred.
One possible application would be the use of military maps. You could roll up the display like a scroll and place in a protective case. The screen could be large enough to plan a mission. With the use of satellite/UAV technology, you could overlay a overhead view over the existing map. Basically, its the size and flexibility that presents the advantage here.
HP's dispute involved 11 companies, each of which was accused of importing into the U.S. and selling patent-infringing products.
Two of the companies -- InkPlusToner.com and Comptree Ink --entered into a settlement agreement with HP in which they will no longer sell the disputed cartridges and pay HP an undisclosed sum of money. A settlement with a third company is expected, and a fourth company agreed to stop importing the disputed cartridges. As for the remaining companies, a judge entered default judgments against them.

Acer officially unveiled its Aspire TimelineX 1830T thin and light laptop

Other accouterments include Wi-Fi, a pair of memory card slots, HDMI port, optical audio, three USB 2.0 ports, Bluetooth 2.1, and up to 8-hours of run time on the 9-cell battery (a step up from the 6-cell battery found on previous Timeline models).

Even as early as this morning, industry sources were quoting March 22 as the release date for Acer's revamped Timeline notebooks. Coming in ahead of schedule, however, Acer today officially unveiled its Aspire TimelineX 1830T thin and light laptop, as well as a handful of other models.

Built around Intel's Calpella platform, the TimelineX 1830T sports an 11.6-inch display and weighs 3 pounds. Acer didn't get too specific with the processor, saying only that it feature an Intel Core 2 Solo chip, but reports suggest it will come outfitted with Intel's Core i5 520UM CPU clocked at 1.06GHz.

Intel has notified its partners that it will not cut the prices of notebooks until the end of May. If this information holds up to be correct, they’ll probably begin lowering the prices of notebook CPUs by 13-40 percent in June in order to make way for their Calpella platform “based on its partners’ inventory status and demand.”

What does this mean for the average consumer like you and I? Well, until notebook manufacturers get rid of their current inventory, nothing. Absolutely nothing!

Battery technology has long been considered the Achilles heal of modern gadgetry

The catch, (yes there's always a catch), is that in its current state of development the battery becomes unusable after only 40 to 50 charge cycles. Li-ion by comparison can typically handle anywhere from 300 to 500 full discharges. This is a pretty major caveat, and likely means it will still be quite awhile before this starts getting commercialized.

The real breakthrough with lithium-sulfur is the silicon nanowire technology which has actually been experimented with by Stanford engineers since late 2007. The new batteries are being described not just as more powerful, but safer too.

I can live with the short life if they are cheap. What I mean is if these batteries cost like $10 Dollars US for a pack 6 or even 4. But of course these are going to be for those custom cells that come in odd shapes for small devices. Still if the replacement is only like $10 bucks then I can handle buying a new battery every month or so for the privilege of having a battery that lets me run a laptop at full swing all day.

Right now, with an increase of 80% over Li-ion batteries, the charge limit could be almost ignored in certain applications. I'm thinking long-range military and scientific instruments, remotely located temporary installations, etc. The charge limit would be a major crutch to consumer electronics, but in certain applications the charging capacity would more than easily make up for the charge limit.

Battery technology has long been considered the Achilles heal of modern gadgetry, but the smart folks over at Stanford may just be on track to solve the issue. A new battery type is in the works called "lithium-sulfur" which currently offers an 80 percent improvement in capacity over Li-ion, and promises a theoretical increase of up to 400 percent as the technology matures.

HP's MediaSmart Home Server can store TiVo

HP’s MediaSmart servers are based on Windows Home Server, and are designed to serve as a central storage resource for media, music, photos, and movies, as well as a network backup point for PCs and Macs on a home network. The servers can also stream media to compatible PCs, Macs, and TV via the home network or the Internet, and automatically push photos to social media and sharing sites.

Folks who are heavy TiVo users have, at one point, likely faced a painful dilemma: how to free up enough space to continue recording their favorite programming without forever losing their favorite saved content. Sure, TiVo users have ways to get content off the TiVo, over to a Mac or PC, and perhaps burn the content out to DVD for archival purposes…but it’s not exactly point-and-click.

“With the HP MediaSmart Expander for TiVo, consumers can record more high-definition programs and not worry about filling their DVR since they can transfer their movies and shows on the HP MediaSmart Server and watch them on their PC,” said HP VP Personal Systems Group VP Jason Zajac, in a statement. “Plus, consumers will benefit from all of the additional features the HP MediaSmart Server provides, such as backing up all Windows and Mac computers.”

How, HP is offering a solution—at least for owners of it its MediaSmart Servers: a new free MediaSmart Expander for TiVo application enables users to shuffle TiVo content over to a MediaSmart server for storage, freeing up space on the TiVo device itself. And once the content is on the MediaSmart server, users can share it out with any compatible PC, Mac, or TV in the house.

Brief information and review of LaCie Network Space 2

Of all the tech appliances you might want to prominently display, a mundane network attached storage device probably falls about 78th on most people’s lists, right after VoIP desk phones and before network switches. LaCie’s Network Space 2 may change that. The attractive 1TB NAS sports an exterior design as clean and intuitive as the software that runs it. As we found out, it’s also just as basic as its shape – but entry-level consumers might not mind the lack of high-end features or Formula One performance.

LaCie makes much ado of the fact that the Network Space 2 was designed by industrial design rock star Neil Poulton. Design might be too strong a word for the minimalism Poulton has employed here: It’s literally a glossy black box with ports in it. A blue power light up front that projects a bright square onto the surface it sits on is clever, but otherwise there’s not much going on here. Don’t take that as a jab: We much prefer the clean lines and understated elegance of this design to some of the over-engineered monstrosities we’ve seen elsewhere, and the whole box has a very solid feel to it.

Because it includes a USB cable, the Network Space 2 can act like a portable USB drive, allowing you to physically cart files from place to place where networks may reach. A front USB slot also allows you to plug in additional storage – like a thumb drive – and access it over the network, or connect a printer and have the Network Space 2 serve as a watt-friendly print server.

Hooking up the LaCie Network Space 2 is a relatively tame two-cable affair: connect the power brick, connect the Ethernet cable, and off you go to the PC. There, you’ll need to pop in the provided disc and install LaCie Network Assistant. The slim six-megabyte client installs in a snap and runs quietly in the Windows taskbar, providing quick access to different “shares” as well as the admin.
