How to use your netbook for your business

Netbook, it is no longer a strange Noun. But do you know the way to use your netbook for your business?
Most netbooks being sold are already pre-loaded with Windows XP Home or one version of Linux or another. What this means is that you can basically do basic office functions on your netbook because of pre-installed office software like MS Office on Windows XP and Open Office on Linux.

The answer would definitely be a 'yes', especially if you don't have any issues using a computer with a smaller screen and an even smaller keyboard.

If you have an Asus Eee PC netbook, you can supplement your existing office suite by downloading useful office software like the photo editing software GIMP, page design software Scribus, double-entry accounting software KMyMoney, and the label maker Glabels.

If you are running a small office or a home-based business (and thus have three other computers in your possession), connect your computers with Windows XP using the Network Setup Wizard. Ideally, your computers should all be running on Windows XP.

Networking your computers can be summed up in these steps:

1. Take note of your computer's location and hardware.

3. Choose whether you want to network through Ethernet LAN or Wireless LAN. You will need to install a Network Interface Card (NIC) in each computer. If you opt for Ethernet LAN you need to run cabling between the computers.

5. Run the Network Setup Wizard on the other computers. There are many advantages to networking your netbook, along with other computers, if you are running a business. One main advantage is that you can share printers and drives between computers. You also eliminate the need for transferring files through CDs or flash disk, thus minimizing the risk of virus infection from computer to computer. You also get to save up on storage space since you can work on a shared file, yet store it only in one computer.

2. If you are sharing the Internet connection, choose which computer will be your Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) host. This should be your most powerful computer (not necessarily your netbook).

4. Run the Network Setup Wizard on your ICS host computer.

How to save money-- Do you really need the best laptop?

You have a mount of money, and you want to buy a laptop. There are several choices, and you want to pick the best one. Even pay more money. But, do you really need the best one?

The person who goes on the internet just to check their e-mails or to chat with their friends will only require a basic computer with minimal amount of RAM as well as programs. They wouldn't need to get all the up grades or even fill their laptop with major amount of gigs.

A college student, depending on what type of classes he or she are taking, must decide if they would want to get graphic programs or not. A big issue with students is that they want the laptop to be conveniently mobile. Some laptops are bulky and have some weight. The best college laptop is the one that works for that particular person.
What else should we consider ?
Size and weight / how portable - CPU or Processor type - Windows Vista or XP - Dedicated or shared memory graphics card - How many USB Ports do you need - CD/DVD - Screen Size and type - How cool does the laptop look - what is its role or purpose - How to save money on top of the range machines.

Size/Portability - the most common laptop screen sizes are between 13-15 inches, due to this it generally means the lowest prices, which is great if you are out to save some money, but if you travel around a lot then a heavy laptop could work out to be more in Osteopath fees than the total cost of the laptop, so if you travel a lot a small laptop is a real blessing, after all even if the laptop itself is not too heavy, by the time we add the mains adapter, a padded case, plus anything else you need to carry, it can start to get pretty heavy specially if carried around for a while. The same cannot really be said for 17" laptops, if your looking for something with a larger screen that is fine, but if you need to travel at all why not invest in a small laptop and put the extra money towards getting a 19" external screen which is bigger and can also be used in conjunction with the laptop screen, in effect giving two screens.

Processor or CPU - Processors have changed a lot over the past few years and now it seems many companies appear to be bolting on more and more processor cores. So at present a laptop needs to have a dual core processor or above. Dual core is the present standard with Intel’s Core 2 Duo and AMD’s Turion 64 x2, both are very good processors, but my personal opinion is AMD has the edge due to its cheaper price. If you don’t mind waiting and have the money, checkout some of the Quad core laptops coming onto the market.

The Operating system - If you want a laptop with Windows XP and you have found you can only purchase with Windows Vista (which is more common now) do not just presume that you can simply wipe away Vista and replace with XP, a lot of new pc hardware may not have XP drivers developed for it, this can create real headaches when trying to change over to XP.

Graphic Cards - it is generally impossible to upgrade the video capabilities on a laptop, whatever video card is has installed is what your stuck with, so if you enjoy gaming or need high end graphic abilities the laptop will need a type of graphics card with its own dedicated memory, otherwise graphic performance will suffer if it is used for high end graphics or gaming.

USB ports - How many is enough, the average amount of USB ports on a laptop is around 3-4 this may sound like enough, but once you plug in a keyboard –printer– mouse – flash drive they are all in use, you could always purchase a hub, as they are pretty cheap, but the easiest options is to buy a laptop with more ports than you need in the first place. Another point to check, every laptop should have USB 2 ports, but it’s worth checking this as USB 1 is around 10 times slower.

DVD & CD drive - A lot of the information given in regards to CD/DVD drives can be a little confusing terms such as Single and Dual layer - CD/RW DVD/Rom. Just about all new laptops now should have a Dual layer DVD writer drive this will do just about everything such as reading and writing to CD’s and DVD’s and reading and playing them too.

Screen size - this was also covered above to a certain degree with the portability section, the larger the screen the heavier it will be, plus the power consumption will be more too, so if you invest in a heavy duty battery it will get even heavier, there are also some lovely screen technologies to choose from including tru brite which gives the screen a shiny effect

* Establish Budget - The bottom line is that consumers can't always afford a laptop with everything they want. A realistic price range should be set, based on the consumer's budget, including how much he or she is able or willing to save in preparation for the purchase.

* Research - Once the consumer has determined his or her needs, prioritized the "wants," and set a price range, it's time to shop. Consumers should look for the best deals in retail outlets as well as online.

Steps to change a Computer Hard Drive Disk

Hard Drive Disk is not necessary, but sometimes we need to use it, so usually when we buy a computer, we also buy a Hard Drive Disk with it. But when your Hard Drive Disk goes bad, what should we do? The answer is to buy a new one, here we will introduce the steps of changing or installing a Hard Drive Disk.

PREPARING TO INSTALL
We decided to add a Western Digital Caviar SE 250 internal hard drive ($249) to an old Dell Optiplex GX1 system we had lying around the office. In this system, up to two 3.5-in. hard drives may be installed in the vertical bracket at the front of the computer. You'll easily spot the bracket after removing your machine's cover.

Next you'll need to decide how you want to configure the jumpers on your hard drives. Jumpers are small switches that determine how your drives will work with your operating system. If you're using two EIDE (Enhanced Integrated Drive Electronics) drives, like we are, and your system isn't too old, you'll probably be able to use the Cable Select jumper position. The position of the drives on the cable connecting the drives to the motherboard determines how they'll work.
Steps

1. Static electricity can seriously damage the components inside a computer. To avoid this you must ensure you are grounded when operating inside your computer. One way to do this is to purchase an anti-static wrist strap which you should wear at all times. The wrist-strap plugs into an electrical socket which will automatically discharge the static electricity in your body.
2. If you don't have one then every one minute touch the back of the tower where the metal is the static from your body will go.
3. The hard drive.A hard drive - which is also called a "hard disk" - is much like a filing cabinet. The programs and data are stored on the hard disk and the computer accesses them as they are needed. When the computer accesses the hard drive, it is reading and moving the stored information into the RAM memory. That memory is the temporary workspace. However, the original file is still on the hard disk and is left undisturbed until the file is saved.
4. When the computer stores or "saves" information, it writes the data to the hard disk. That process results in the old file being replaced or modified with the new information. If you save data to a new file, or install new software, the information is written to the disk in an available, unused portion of the disk.
5. Getting into the tower. Open both sides of computer case by removing screws at the back of the tower and sliding the panels off.
6. Removing the cables. Remove the data cables and power cables from the back of the old drive.
7. Unscrewing the drive. The drive should be held in place by screws on both sides of the tower. Remove the screws with one hand supporting the drive. Once the screws are removed slide the drive out of its holder.
8. Matching the jumpers. Once the old drive is removed, look at the position of the jumper on the drives rear. This jumper tells the drive whether it is the computer's main drive or auxiliary drive, so you must make sure that the new drive's jumper is in the same position as the old one.
9. Install the hard drive. screw the drive in and replace the data and power cables. Then replace the tower's side panels.
10. Re-install your software. When you have switched the computer on you will have to re-install all your software. Start with the operating system then all the others you require in any order. On a PC the operating system is generally Windows, on a newer Mac it is generally Mac OS X.
