Apple sued HTC for patent infringement

According to GIzmodo (though not yet confirmed), two of the patents are related to power management, two are for personalized phone dialers, and one is for a dialer with special memory access. Apple threw everything they had at HTC, and by comparison this is small potatoes. It could be HTC is attempting to extract a cross-licensing deal from Apple, or just get them to call it a day.

Long story short, it looked a little grim for the relatively young HTC, though it will still likely take years for the case to run its course. But now HTC is coming out swinging, and has filed a complaint with the International Trade Commission (ITC) against Apple for infringing five of their patents. HTC has asked the ITC to ban imports of the iPhone, iPad , and iPod Touch. This is a common request in these cases.

You may remember a few months back when Apple sued HTC for patent infringement. The case centered mostly around HTC's Android phones. No corresponding federal lawsuit has been filed as of yet, but that could be coming too. We'll keep an eye on this one folks.

I'm glad to see Apple getting a taste of it's own lawyer prescribed medicine, even if it's on the small scale. At least this complaint can't be dismissed like Xerox was in Apple vs Microsoft & HP because of stature of limitations. If HTC can get some sort of settlement with Apple from this it'd be wonderful.

NEC claims their new video identification system can succeed

The NEC detection system works by creating a digital fingerprint from the original content. The files are 76 bytes in size per frame, making storage of many fingerprints doable. The system can work with scenes as short as two seconds; say goodbye to fair use. NEC is also claiming it can detect content that has been altered by converting it from digital to analog, or filming in a theater. It is unclear if a video can be manipulated sufficiently to evade the filter.

First of all, there is no such thing as "uncrackable" DRM. Another thing; how can they be happy with a 96% detection rate?! What about the other 4% that paid for the goddamn movie that won't be able to watch it because of this DRM?

The only thing DRM ever does is fuck over the customers that actually pay for the stuff, and the pirates always find their way around DRM anyway. The companies that do DRM are only wasting their money and driving away the good paying customers by turning them into pirates. The technology is on its way to being integrated into the upcoming MPEG-7 media standard. We'll be interested to see if NEC is promising more than it can deliver here. It sounds like Star Trek level tech to us.

Automated technology to detect pirated content has been tried before, but the results are usually a mess of false positives and misses. NEC claims their new video identification system can succeed where the others have failed. According to NEC, the technology has a detection rate of 96% and a suspiciously good false positive rate of 1 in 5 million.

MSI wants to describe its new CX705MX

The CX705MX also incorporates MSI's ECO Engine Power saving technology, which lets user choose from one of five power management levels, including video game, film, presentation, word processing, and turbo.

Other hardware consists of an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 250GB/320GB/500GB hard drive, 4-in-1 memory card reader, HDMI output, three USB ports, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, 1.3MP webcam, and Windows 7 Home Premium. We're not so sure a 17.3-inch chassis qualifies as a "supersized" notebook, but if that's how MSI wants to describe its new CX705MX, then so be it.

MSI won't get any argument from us over the ATI Radeon HD 545V discrete graphics solution shoved inside. This should give the mostly entry-level notebook enough muscle to push HD videos on the 1600x900 resolution panel, which is accompanied by a pair of 2W speakers and a subwoofer.

Cheap laptop the everyday man can afford while making 10 bucks an hour! And I don't have to watch my fiend play his xbox360 every time I go over his house, I just boot this baby up and start up a game of resident evil 5 or another game I feel like! So I am really happy with MSI products! Never had a MSI fail yet. And there cooling solutions are the best.

Sony suddenly wants to cash in on all the the third-party extended warranties

Of course it's all going to come down to pricing, and Sony's is fairly competitive. For a barebones extension, Sony will charge $50 to bump up warranty service on its PS3 console from one year to two years, or $60 for three years of coverage. The PSP console will run $30 for two years or $40 for three years. And the accidental damage insurance? That's another $40.

You can't check out of a Best Buy or other retail electronics chain without a sales associate pushing for an extended warranty. Even Toys R Us will try to up sell you on additional coverage, but if Sony has its way, you'll go through them for longer warranties when shopping a PlayStation 3 or PlayStation Portable (PSP) console.

It appears Sony suddenly wants to cash in on all the the third-party extended warranties being sold at the retail level, and perhaps cut into those offered by services like SquareTrade. Helping to do that, Sony will offer additional accidental damage coverage, so should you fall down a flight of stairs and land on your PS3 to soften your blow, you're covered.

What do you think about Sony's pricing? Do you usually buy an extended warranty when purchasing electronics? Tell us in the comments section below.
