Sony will unveil new PSP

For the past couple months, we've been covering the ongoing rumors that Sony is prepping a new PlayStation Portable. Well, more details are emerging, with game site 1Up.com reporting that Sony will trot out its new Universal Media Disc-less PSP at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in June, targeting it for a September release in Japan, followed by a U.S. launch in October or November. While the potential name for the new unit hasn't been confirmed, there are indications that it might called the PSP Go.
As previously reported, the new PSP will allegedly slide open to reveal its controls. But those hoping for dual analog sticks may be disappointed--word is the new PSP will retain the same control scheme, as depicted in the mock-up above. Whether or not it has a touch screen is still up in the air, as 1Up says (much as I had previously) that it wouldn't be shocked if Sony borrowed "many design features from their Mylo 2 handheld Internet device, which is seemingly dead in the water."
pparently, Sony is looking to E3 to reinvigorate the PSP platform, which has seen fairly strong hardware sales but has lagged in the software department and now must contend with Nintendo's DS refresh, the DSi, and iPhone gaming. Recently, Sony announced that such titles as Rock Band, Soul Calibur, LittleBigPlanet, Tekken 6, and MotorStorm would hit the console, and earlier this month, Sony Computer Entertainment America's director of hardware marketing, John Koller, told GameSpot that more than 50 percent of the PSP's 2009 lineup had yet to be announced.
Keep in mind most games played on the PSP currently are illegal downloads. So, while people are ready for downloads, I don't think PSP users are going to be happy, since this device will most likely be locked down pretty harshly to make publishers happy.
To match iphone, they would need at least a touchscreen and a few thousand more developers. Sony is becoming the 'luxury brand' of gaming, but there's ironically not enough money in that, as the PS3 is amply demonstrating. Why they would support another overpriced console with poor developer support is beyond me. They should kill either PSP or PS3 and go software only in whichever market they abandon, their first step in going Sega's route.

Four Most powerful competitors for Software: Cisco, IBM, Oracle, Microsoft

Enterprise software is coming down to four big choices: Cisco Systems or IBM or Oracle or Microsoft. Hewlett-Packard? HP is doing very well in hardware, but it lacks the overarching software strategy that fuels these other four.
It's a fun time to be in the industry. For one thing, it's fascinating to watch (and, in some cases, assist) each of the Big Four to use open source as a strategic club with which to pummel their neighbors. Open source, thy name is capitalism.
But open source is just one part of it. The bigger part is conflicting product-level competition. Microsoft dominates the desktop and uses it as a "home base" from which to compete in other markets. Cisco spreads the power of the network into a wide variety of complementary businesses. Oracle uses the database as the center of the enterprise-computing universe, but surrounds it with a host of exceptional software.
Each, of course, is starting to infiltrate the others' safety zone with new initiatives. IBM, as announced on Monday, is pairing up with Brocade to go after Cisco's core networking market. Cisco, for its part, is stepping on just about everybody's toes with collaboration initiatives that veer toward Microsoft's SharePoint, even while it adds a server line to compete with IBM.
Oracle announced the acquisition of Sun Microsystems to help give it a leg up on IBM and Microsoft through Java, Sun's hardware lines, and MySQL. Microsoft, for its part, is expanding into everyone else's markets with the ubiquitous SharePoint. This is only the beginning. The question is, "The beginning of what?" In some ways, this dramatic industry consolidation reduces customer choice. But in other ways, it enhances it.
SAP's strength in enterprise resource planning, or ERP, software could serve as a nice complement to one of the Big Four's product lines--or as a beachhead for the assembly and deployment of an additional, independent software ecosystem. Red Hat could do the same, fostering an open-source ecosystem to rival that of the Big Four, mostly proprietary software vendors. While the company has shown little ambition beyond infrastructure software, there are hints of a growing interest to sell (and build?) solutions. Red Hat's recent channel expansion through Synnex suggests that it may be toe-dipping its way toward a larger vision of being the hub of the open-source "wheel."
Anyone who has been around networking knows that Cisco is not a software company. They have had how many people in charge of network management in the last 5 years. CiscoWorks, arguably their primary software platform, is ridiculed in the industry...the joke for those in the industry is that Cisco works does not work.

RealDVD Ripping Software Trial Will Begin

Hot on the heels of the Pirate Bay trial, which just recently ended, another trial is just now getting started. This one, however, involves RealNetworks and its RealDVD ripping program, a $30 piece of software that has drawn the ire of the Movie Picture Association of America (MPAA).
At the heart of the issue is RealDVD's ability to make digital copies of DVDs to a user's hard drive while still retaining the DVD-copy protection. The process even adds a further layer of DRM to the files it rips, so as far as RealNetworks is concerned, the program doesn't run afoul of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).
Naturally, the MPAA vehemently disagrees, even going so far as to say the software should be called StealDVD instead of RealDVD. Even more troubling for the MPAA is the RealNetworks' plan to develop DVD-saving software for manufacturers of DVD players. Facet, as it's being called, would allow Toshiba, Sony, and other companies to sell players capable of copying DVDs and save them internally. A prototype capable of storing about 70 movies has already been made, and it's expected that similar devices would sell for around $300 or less.
"The movie industry wants people to buy DVDs an so do we," said Bill Way, VP and general counsel of RealNetworks. "They have a real problem with piracy, and we are not that problem. I don't think our product will make the problem one iota bigger. I think it gives people an opportunity to make digital copies of their movies in a legal way.
"With the legislation against the Pirate Bay only a couple weeks old the courts are now trying to move quick and hard to remove the rest of our digital liberties. Now if I go out and buy a DVD and I want to make a back up of that movie, why shouldn't I be allowed? I legally obtained a copy and yet I am still made to go the route of RealDVD or AnyDVD to back up my movies. If nothing else these DRM schemes make someone want to pirate more so they can get an unemcumbered piece of video. I don't know how much more it will take before even the die hard DRM people will finally say enough is enough. Hell even iTunes got the picture...

Apple's ads & Microsoft's

As Apple celebrated, Microsoft canceled the company picnic. As Apple announced results that beat expectations, Microsoft had its first ever year-over-year dip in sales. As Apple announced a billion app downloads, Microsoft gritted its molars with a view to finally shaking a little of the smugness from Apple's chops.
In recent weeks, Microsoft has turned to a strategy of death by a thousand cuts (or, well, at least two) on the Apple brand. Macs are expensive. They're cool for drooling fools. Oh, and did we mention they're expensive? While Apple has kept on steadily associating Microsoft with turgid, virus-infested slop made by the poorly dressed and pitiful.
But the difference between Apple and Microsoft advertising--and their brands--can only be told partially through these campaigns. The John Hodgman/Justin Long nipple-tweaking campaign is merely a portion of Apple's advertising. It doesn't define the brand. It enhances one aspect of it.For reasons many, varied, and probably political, the company never found a campaign to better it.
Advertising came and went. Consistency was non-existent. Contrast that with even the Hodgman/Long ads--they maintain the clean white backdrop enjoyed by so many other Apple ads. Whatever they say, they say Apple immediately.
In that same period, the Apple brand seems to have gained a strength that not everyone might have predicted. But how much is simply down to Apple's advertising? It depends what you call advertising. Apple's whole culture is built around the understanding that its very best advertising isn't TV spots or print ads. It's the products.
Apple products are seen far more often than any of the company's ads. They can be admired, touched, played, and stroked. And the majority are visually striking.
Many of Apple's ads are nothing more than simple product demonstrations. Beautifully executed, celebrating their own simplicity, with often superbly chosen music. But still simple product demonstrations.
As different products are launched, each ad adds to the style and simplicity of the whole brand. And the values that Apple embraces--simplicity and style being just two--are ones that last through time. They matter to the customer.
Apple are synonymous with style. Microsoft is synonymous with Office and Windows. Look at these 2 products. They are both bloated, and virus friendly. People begrudgingly use these products for one reason or another. such as their employer forces them to use Windows and Office or a customer wants to use a program that only runs on Windows. The biggest one is that Windows comes when you buy a new PC.

1,600 full-time positions Offered by Apple

Apple's retail group shed about 1,600 full-time equivalent workers during its second fiscal quarter.
Apple's second fiscal quarter was a blowout considering the state of the economy, but executives noted that the retail division took a hit during the quarter, with average revenue per store declining to $5.9 million from $7.1 million a year ago. With overall revenue from that segment increasing just 1 percent to $1.74 billion and with 45 new stores having been opened since last year, something had to give.
The retail arm of the company now employs 14,000 full-time equivalent workers, down from 15,600 at the end of Apple's first fiscal quarter, according to a filing with the SEC. Reports surfaced late last year that Apple was looking into ways to reduce the number of hours worked by part-time employees as a hedge against a coming recession.
Apple opened just one store during the quarter. In January it said that it plans to ease back on the number of stores it opens in 2009, which seems prudent amid a global economic downturn.
Apple, like any company, is not immune to the economic conditions. Yes, they did well financially, but only at the expense of making difficult choices and sometimes those choices include the loss of jobs for some employees. It's a fact of life and best to just move on.

What could Apple do with the economic gloom

Apple sold 2.22 million Macs, 11 million iPods, and 3.79 million iPhones during the quarter, meeting or exceeding expectations from financial analysts. CFO Peter Oppenheimer called it "the best nonholiday quarter revenue and earnings in our history," in a statement announcing the results.
As usual, Oppenheimer provided third-quarter guidance below what analysts were seeking. The consensus Wall Street estimate for Apple's June quarter was $8.28 billion in revenue and earnings per share of $1.12, while Oppenheimer said Apple expects to record between $7.7 billion and $7.9 billion in revenue and earnings per share between 95 cents and a dollar during the current quarter.
During Apple's earnings conference call, Oppenheimer attributed that lower guidance to, among other things, the fact that Apple has stopped recognizing revenue from iPhone sales after the March 17th iPhone OS 3.0 event, and does not plan to recognize iPhone revenue again until the company ships that software sometime this summer. Apple accounts for iPhone sales on a subscription basis, meaning the company defers the initial revenue from the sale of an iPhone over a 24-month period in order to satisfy an obscure accounting rule.
Apple COO Tim Cook said during the company's conference call that shipments to educational customers are weak right now, given the budget crunch that many U.S. states are facing. He also said that shipments of Apple's most expensive Macs--the Mac Pro and MacBook Pro--were off during the quarter, but that the less-expensive consumer-oriented Macs held up reasonably well.
iPod Touch sales doubled compared to last year, Cook said, and Apple has now sold 37 million iPhones and iPod Touches combined. In March, Apple said it had sold 30 million of those two devices since their introduction. And as had been foreshadowed earlier on Tuesday, Apple sold 3.79 million iPhones, which Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster predicted based on AT&T's activation numbers for the quarter.
iPhone shipments were up sharply compared to last year, but they fell coming off the holiday quarter.Apple right now is being propped up by strong iPod and iPhone sales, mostly because these devices can be used by both Mac and Windows users easily. As a user of a new 16 GB 4G iPod nano to supplement my 8 GB 3G iPod nano, after using a nano going to another brand of portable media player makes you realize how masterful Apple figured out the ergonomics of using such a device. What do you think?

Apple's 1 billionth app will be available on Apirl 23

We could stare at the countdown tickers on Worldometers all day. Wow, 10.3 billion toilets have been flushed so far today! So it's no wonder we love the Apple App store contest with its mesmerizing flipping numbers counting us down to the 1 billionth app download, when some lucky punter will win shedloads of Mac stuff and a $10,000 iTunes gift card. As the hour approaches--we're topping 988 million and change at the time of this writing--Mobile Squared, a U.K. research company, is helping us game the system by figuring out when the crucial moment will occur. According to its totally unchecked calculations, D-Day is this Thursday afternoon, April 23, U.K. time (Thursday morning in the U.S.)--so that's two days for another 13 million downloads, app fans.
Mobile Squared notes that it took almost six months to reach its 500 million app downloads on January 19, and the following 500 million downloads have taken just 94 days, so the rate is picking up.

Oracle to buy Sun in $7.4 billion, IBM surprised

Previous report: Oracle, not IBM, will be buying Sun Microsystems. Oracle and Sun announced Monday that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Oracle will acquire Sun common stock for $9.50 per share in cash. That puts the value of the transaction at about $7.4 billion, or $5.6 billion net of Sun's cash and debt.
Sun's board has unanimously approved the transaction. The deal is expected to close this summer, subject to Sun stockholder approval, regulatory approvals, and closing conditions. Last month, reports surfaced that IBM wanted to buy Sun, but Sun didn't like the terms that Big Blue was offering.
But apparently Ballmer, who is rarely at a loss for words, didn't exactly have a sound byte at the ready. "I need to think about it," Ballmer told reporters in Moscow, according to Reuters. "I am very surprised." I'm hearing that Ballmer wasn't the only one surprised by Monday's deal. According to a source of mine, IBM hadn't given up on purchasing Sun and was blindsided by Oracle's move.
Oracle is, of course, one of Microsoft's chief rivals in the database and business applications space--a fact that Ballmer highlighted in an interview in February. Sun is also a longtime rival, although the two companies have had a technology partnership in recent years stemming from their settlement of legal hostilities back in 2004.
I wonder (honestly and without being negative) what Ballmer's traits are that make his opinion worth anything. What does he bring to the table? What is he good at (besides crappy infomercials)? Does anyone honestly care what his opinion on anything is?
What do you think?

Why Low Cost Netbook is Best For College Students

A student's life these days require that they are equipped with a computer. Assignments are now basically done on computers. No more passing of a handwritten documents. Everything needs to be neatly done in a word processor, spreadsheet, or presentation.
Today, we see students carrying laptops and notebooks everywhere in their college campus. How many of them can really afford a full fledge notebook? I'd say many can't afford one. To those parents who've sacrificed to get a notebook for their children in college, I absolutely bow my head to you. The minimum cost of a basic low end notebook is about MYR2500. That's a lot of money for most parents. So it means that low cost netbook is best for student.
So here comes the first reason, it is cheap. A basic netbook, currently costs around USD$300. That translates to about MYR1300 in the Malaysian market. This means, parents and college students could save about MYR1000 if they get themselves one of these low cost netbooks instead of a regular notebook. That's a huge savings. For parents who've got two children in college, they can basically get two netbooks for the same price of a single basic low end notebook. Thanks to these cheap netbooks, more students can now own a computer. If only they can somehow bring it even lower. How about below MYR1000? That would mean, a sub USD$200. I do think it's possible. Maybe in a couple of years or so.
I can also give you some other reason, the light. At first, you don't really notice the heaviness of that 5kg. After a while, your shoulders and your back starts to ache and you begin to wonder why. Only then do you realize that it's probably caused by the sheer weight of that extra 5kg which you have to carry around daily. The netbooks of today weighs in at about 1.5kg. Some would probably weigh more depending on the battery it's installed with. Not a lot more, however. A netbook with a 6 cell battery weighs in at about slightly less than 2kg. Still way better than a standard notebook.
College students, especially the ladies, would certainly benefit from the netbooks being light weight. Being as light as they are currently, college students can surely carry them around as they commute around the college campus from one class to another. No worries of a shoulder or back pain as the netbooks are very light indeed.
Now, come to its communication features. Almost all netbooks currently are configured with a handsome lot of communication features. It's got speakers, cameras, wifi, and bluetooth for a start. These components are already good enough to allow users to communicate with ease over the internet. Even the most basic low cost netbook is more than capable of allowing its' users to utilize all the above mentioned communication channel. That is why a netbook, even the most basic ones are already more than capable to allow college students to communicate with their peers from wherever they are.
Last but not least, style. Have you seen these low cost netbooks? Don't they look awesome? One thing is for sure, the manufacturers are really putting in their effort to make these tiny units look exceptionally good. The finishing they've put on these netbooks are simply pleasing to the eyes. A true eye candy, I might say so myself. They come in multiple choice of colors. You name it, they come in orange, blue, red, yellow, gray, black, green, and many more.So aren't they the best reason for student to choose low cost laptop?

Apple Was Defied by Psystar for A Whole Year

Since one year ago, the Apple universe was turned upside down by a tiny company from Southern Florida, kicking off a real-world Clone War between Apple and Psystar. Today, the essential question regarding Psystar is unchanged: does the company have the right to sell computers with Apple's Mac OS X Leopard preinstalled, as it has been doing since April 14, 2008? Psystar set off shock waves through the Apple world that week, as an army of journalists, bloggers, fanboys, and detractors set off on a manic search for anything and everything related to the company and its desktops.
Psystar emerged a year ago as a small independent system builder, the likes of which can be found in any medium-size town in the U.S. What provoked the interest and ire of the Mac community was Psystar's decision to ship so-called "white box" systems with Mac OS preinstalled alongside systems with Windows Vista and Linux, in defiance of Apple's licensing policies for that operating system.
Whether or not Psystar sees another anniversary will depend in large part on legal wrangling in Northern California, far from Psystar's Doral, Fla., headquarters. The litigation between Apple and Psystar appears to be in a bit of a lull as the one-year anniversary passes, with lawyers immersed in the discovery phase of the trial following months of lawsuits and countersuits from both companies.
Apple's stance is pretty clear: the end-user licensing agreement that comes with Leopard forbids the user from installing that operating system on anything other than an Apple-labeled computer. Psystar, on the other hand, is attempting to argue that Apple is abusing its copyright on Mac OS X in requiring the operating system to run on Apple hardware after Psystar unsuccessfully tried to lodge an antitrust defense.Psystar will not release sales figures, but Pedraza said that sales have exceeded his expectations to date. Pedraza said the company is still planning to release a notebook, but hinted that it might be something more along the lines of a Netbook rather than a full-sized notebook.
Still, the Open Computer is otherwise an almost identical Mac experience to the MacBook Pro I use at home. When it comes to reliability and service, Psystar may not be able to compete with Apple, but for people who know their way around a computer, the Open Computer is a Mac.
And that could have huge ramifications for the software industry if Psystar is able to overturn Apple's end-user licensing agreement, which could usher in another Mac clone era just when the operating system's popularity is arguably at an all-time high. The first Mac clone era did not go well for Apple, and it's not hard to see similar problems occurring if the perception of Mac OS X as stable and reliable start to wane as it is forced to interact with hardware for which it was not designed. Already, Psystar imitators such as PearC are trying their hand at the market.
Based on some of the definitions provided here, I suppose Apple has a monopoly of the Mac market . . and Dell has a monopoly of the Dell market since no one but Dell can produce Dell computers, MS has a monopoly of the Windows market since no one but MS can produce Windows, and Ford has a monopoly of the Ford market since no one but Ford can build Ford automobiles.
Psystar's argument doesn't hold water because a "market" isn't defined by a single product/provider unless there really is a monopoly (like power utility companies, for example, which are heavily regulated). It's not the "Mac OS X" market, or the "Dell" market, or the "Windows" market, it's the personal computer market which includes many options/producers of hardware, operating systems and application software, just like the automotive market has many producers and models.

Asus laptops with Intel Anti-Theft Tech

Apparently Intel’s Anti-Theft Technology which was heard of sometime ago and nothing since, is now being loaded into Asus laptops, so Asus have announced. The Asus P30 and Asus P80 laptops both now come with the Intel anti-theft system inside, and it also come with some laptop accessories.
This Intel system apparently enables the laptop owner to send a type of “poison pill” remotely to the laptop and thus renders the machine inoperable by “comprehensively shutting it down.”
However, if the owner happens to get the machine returned they can reactivate the laptop by inputting a pass-phrase. Only thing is this tech still doesn’t stop thieves from ripping the lappy apart and selling it on.

Microsoft Comfirms Fault to 'Apple Tax' and Amends

On Monday, Microsoft noted that it has updated both Kay's white paper and the accompanying blog post and chart to reflect the fact that both failed to take into account Apple's latest hardware specifications. The new paper and chart use slightly different models on the PC side.
However, the main points I (and others) made last week regarding Microsoft's bad math haven't changed. Kay's report (and Microsoft's accompanying tax return) still put charges in the Mac column that they fail to account for on the PC side when it comes to both software and services.
Suggesting that users can just bring their old copy of Office and Quicken--and that they won't need to upgrade over the five-year life of their new PC--assumes a lot. It's particularly laughable as Kay and Microsoft add in a charge for updating iLife on the Mac side.
On the services side, Microsoft had a fair point of AppleCare being more than Dell's basic three-year warranty. But then it threw in all kinds of other services, such as in-store training and the optional MobileMe service to again lose credibility.
Point is monkeyfun14 that most people will go for the commercial antivirus programs that are thrust in their face every time they turn on a Windows computer or talk to technical support for help. Most people will not search out the free alternatives, or even trust them.
And the point is also, that you seem to be missing, is that Macintoshes don't NEED antivirus, but a Windows computer does. In fact, fire up a fresh install of Windows and what's the first thing it asks for (when you finally get completely set up)? It's strongly urges you to buy/download virus protection! First thing, right out of the box.
The 'apple tax' is pretty much dead IMO. Seriously, the small premium paid in price is easily made up for by significantly better customer service, a more hassle free OS, and simply put, significantly less head ache. I tell all my non-tech relatives (mostly the older ones) to "just suck it up and spend a little more for a mac You will thank me later." They always do. The maintenance required for keeping a PC up and running at full speed is time that your basic user does not want to invest.

IBM News: Moore's Law is at end

Report said: Moore's Law is maxing out. This is an oft-made prediction in the computer industry. The latest to chime in is an IBM fellow.Exponential growth in every industry eventually has to come to an end, according Anderson, who cited railroads and speed increases in the aircraft industry.

Intel co-founder Gordon Moore predicted in 1965 that the number of transistors on a microprocessor would double approximately every two years--a prediction that has proved to be remarkably resilient. But IBM Fellow Carl Anderson, who researches server computer design at IBM, claims the end of the era of Moore's Law is nigh.

"A generation or two of continued exponential growth will likely continue only for leading-edge chips such as multicore microprocessors, but more designers are finding that everyday applications do not require the latest physical designs," Anderson said in the EE Times' report. Anderson also cited the staggering costs of research and fabs (factories) as a formidable barrier for continued advancement. Few companies can afford chip plants that typically cost billions of dollars to build and maintain.

So, what does the future hold? Anderson cited three technologies: optical interconnects, 3D chips--which have circuits and components stacked on top of each other--and accelerator-based processing as seeing significant advancements, the report said. The latter technology, accelerators, is hot right now.

In addition to IBM, companies such as Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices' ATI unit supply graphics-processor-based computers to accelerate scientific, engineering, and animation applications. Intel is also expected to bring out its Larrabee chip later this year or early next year that can be used as an accelerator.

They have been saying this exact same line for at least five years now, but new designs continue to hit the market. If "3D computing" is the next phase, and if this is stacking circuitry within a microprocessor, then I would suggest Moor's law will live on for a while yet. Moor never put a limitation on the physical size of an IC.

How to Find a Good Deal on Laptop battery

You're biggest helps for finding good laptop battery deals on the Internet, They are going to come from two types of sites: deal aggregators and shopping engines. Deal aggregators go out and look for good laptop battery deals from all across the web and post them in one place for their visitors to browse. Shopping engines allow you to check the laptop battery price for a specific item across all of the laptop battery retailer sites they search.
As laptop prices have dropped quite a bit over the past years so they are not as pricy as they used to be as well as laptop battery, no matter you want to buy Dell Laptop Battery, HP Laptop Battery, Toshiba Laptop Battery, or IBM Laptop Battery. If you are on a tight budget, buying a decent, cheap laptop battery can help you save money. Finding a cheap laptop battery to buy is not always easy but it's possible if you know when, where, and how to look for one.
The nice thing about deal aggregators is that they usually have some experience in looking for these type deals. That means they understand the items they list and how much they would normally cost. They also usually have a sense for when something is fishy because they know the reputable laptop battery retailers and know when something appears "too good to be true." This doesn't mean you should automatically trust a deal aggregator, but at least they should weed out a lot of cruft for you.
The other type of site is a shopping engine. Shopping engines are good for when you know exactly what kind of item you want and just want to find the best price for it. You just put in the name of item you want and the shopping engine will show the prices at several retailers and show you the cheapest price they found. For example, you can put in laptop battery, and it will show the laptop battery price at several laptop battery retailers.
You can also get a good, cheap laptop battery by buying refurbished ones. Refurbished laptop batteries are those laptop batteries that have been returned by the customers because of some minor flaws and are being re-sold to the public. They have gone through inspection and all damages have been repaired so you are 100% sure you're getting a good quality computer. They offer the quality and performance that you need for a lot lower than brand new ones. As you can see, it is really possible to find a good quality but cheap laptop battery.
You just need to know when, where, and how to find it. Keep in mind though that purchasing a laptop battery with the lowest price tag does not always mean you are getting a good deal. If it doesn't perform well, it is not worth the money.
Good luck and you will find the right laptop battery or other laptop accessories you want.
