The Next Big Thing Batteries will be Made from Algae

Well, not really algae, but the cellulose from this algae. For the scientifically inclined, the authors write: “We have also shown that it is possible to coat highly porous Cladophora cellulose substrates with homogeneous, several nanometer thick layer of PPy [polypyrrole] to obtain a high-surface area cellulose composite electrode material and that this material exhibits an exceptionally high ion-exchange capacity.”
Who’d have thought that simple pond scum may be the future of battery technology? Demand for portable power sources is increasing--especially for something longer lasting in a small package. Being environmentally friendly wouldn’t hurt.
A group of scientists from the Angstrom Laboratory, Uppsala University, Sweden, are reporting a breakthrough in the development of a “redox polymer-based electrodes and batteries with high-capacities and very good cycling performances.” And yes, they’re made from algae--the environmentally repugnant Cladophora, to be precise.
While algae, or more precisely PPy-cellulose composite materials, hold promise, the scientists don’t expect they’ll be replacing Li-ion batteries anytime soon. Rather, they’ll best be suited for things Li-ion doesn’t do well, such as clothing or wrapping paper that blinks “Happy Birthday.”
In layman’s terms: PPy in a homogeneous and uninterrupted nano-thin coating (about 1/50,000th the thickness of a human hair) on Cladophora cellulose can both carry a charge and be molded into paper sheets. All it needs to work is “composite paper separated by an ordinary filter paper soaked with sodium chloride serving as the electrolyte.” Bingo-you got a battery that can hold a charge, shows little degradation over a hundred charging cycles, and can be recharged in as little as 11 seconds.

Is Asus Ready to release Ultra-Thin Notebooks

That doesn't mean Asus has no intention of embracing slim notebooks. As Intel tweaks its ultra-thin platform and consumers continue to warm to the market segment, Chen said he expects a much larger proportion in 2010.
As the netbook explosion has proven, consumers are willing to pay for portability, and while that also includes ultra-thins, Asus has been focusing most of its attention elsewhere. According to Tony Chen, Asus' VP, ultra-thins will only account for 10 percent of the company's total notebook sales by the end of 2009.
Chen was also quick to point out that Asus has adopted a handful of exclusive technologies in its UL series ultra-thin laptops, including its Turbo33 technology for improved stability and better performance.
Still, Asus, along with MSI, Acer, and Lenovo, all expected ultra-thins to account for around 20-30 percent of notebook shipments in 2009, and all have adjusted their outlook to around the 10 percent mark.
Amongst their many announcements this week at Computex, Acer also released information about a new, ultrathin laptop aimed at professionals.
The yet unnamed notebook will come with a 13.3-inch screen, up to 4GB of RAM, Intel’s GMA 4500MHD GPU with 64MB of memory (or an upgraded ATI Radeon HD 4330 with 512MB), a multitouch trackpad, 8+ hour battery life, WiFi, three USB ports, a built in mic, a headphone jack and Ethernet.

Samsung Go to netbook lineup

AT&T just added a pair of Windows 7 Starter netbooks to its stable, and while we've got nothing against the Samsung Go and the Acer Aspire One, we just can't help but feel preloading 7 Starter makes the already-dubious subsidized netbook value proposition even worse. Let's break it down: both the Go and the Aspire One will set you back $199 upfront (well, after mail-in rebate), and then you're on the hook for two-year data contract, which will cost you either $35 a month for a 200MB cap or $60 a month for a 5GB cap. Now, $35 a month for 200MB of data is basically worthless for a netbook -- that's what, a half-day of watching YouTube?
So assuming you do what most people do and buy the $60 plan, you're out at least $1,639 over two years for last-gen netbook hardware running a gimped OS that doesn't even let you change the desktop wallpaper. Not exactly a screaming deal. We'd say you're much better off finding a netbook with XP on sale and just getting a regular free-on-contract USB data card, which you'll be able to use on multiple machines -- or, if you absolutely must have Windows 7, holding out for the coming flood of Pine Trail netbooks at CES, which we're hoping will come preloaded with 7 Home Premium.
The netbooks feature 10-inch screens and weigh less than 3 pounds, easily fitting into backpacks, purses and briefcases. The netbook pricing requires the purchase of a new two-year AT&T DataConnect plan - including a 200MB plan option for a newly reduced price of $35 per month or a 5GB plan for $60 per month. AT&T DataConnect plans offer consumer and small business subscribers access to the nation's fastest 3G network, along with free use of AT&T Wi-Fi service, featuring more than 20,000 hot spots nationwide.
"Demand for netbooks remains strong among consumers, small business customers and those who desire constant access to the Internet while on the go," said David Haight, vice president, product development, AT&T emerging devices. "Paired with the nation's fastest 3G network, AT&T Wi-Fi service, and now the value and ease of use of Windows 7, these devices will make very attractive and affordable gifts this holiday season."
"Microsoft is excited that AT&T and its customers are choosing Windows 7 on netbook PCs because it helps simplify tasks, works the way customers want, and makes new things possible," said James DeBragga, general manager of Windows Consumer Product Marketing at Microsoft. "By pairing Windows 7-based netbook PCs with AT&T's 3G service, AT&T customers now have easy access to the ultimate companion PC. It is a small, yet fully featured computer that helps them work efficiently, enjoy rich entertainment and experience the Web virtually anywhere they go. We look forward to supporting AT&T in its efforts."

A better comparison for Netbook and iPhone:

This suddenly made a lot of sense to me because of my personal experience. Take the iPhone 3GS (or Motorola Droid or BlackBerry Storm, take your pick ). To state the obvious, in many respects, this is a personal computer platform for e-mail, texting, Web surfing, music, navigation, YouTube, and the list goes on.
Let me state up front that though I have used Netbooks on a temporary basis, I have never owned one.
I (now) believe that Netbook comparisons to mainstream laptops (which will always disappoint because Netbooks are slower, screens smaller, keyboards more cramped--and this list of comparative shortcomings is long) is really the wrong way to look at it. Let me illustrate.
I recently interviewed the chief technology officer for a large school district in Louisiana that had purchased a lot of Netbooks. And I asked what I thought was the most pertinent question: weren't performance and screen size a concern? She quickly pointed out that my perspective was all wrong.
The point seems obvious to me now. Want to be more productive? Step up to a Netbook. And this follows the same logic of the CTO at the Louisiana school district. And upcoming tablets and media pads from Apple and others will also be marketed as a high-end iPhone-like device, in my opinion.
So, in the next month or so when I try to sort out which Netbook to buy (This CNET review says the HP Mini 5101 is one of the best Netbooks on the market now), I'll be shopping for an upscale smartphone not a stripped-down notebook.
And here's the real proof in the pudding. Where do you see Netbooks being sold these days (think Nokia Booklet)? At phone carriers, like Verizon. The last time I visited a Verizon store, it had 3G Netbooks prominently displayed right next to the Motorola Droid.

HP Envy 15 Notebook is on-hand now

After our mixed feelings on the HP Envy 13, we were excited but also a little bit scared to see the 13's big brother, the Envy 15. It's running a Core i7 processor clocked at 1.6GHz, and has 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4830 discrete graphics fronted by a 1920 x 1080 15.6-inch display despite the fact that it doesn't have a built-in disc drive. Luckily there's an external Blu-ray packed into the box (that's a $225 option on top of the $1,800 base price), but most games and apps these days are available via download anyway, so it's not that big of knock on your power-user cred.
The unboxing experience is actually identical to that of the Envy 13 (quite elegant), and we were happy to see that when we fired up the laptop the trackpad seemed better configured than that of the pre-update Envy 13 we reviewed. We were less enthused to see that the IE comes pre-installed with HP and Norton toolbars -- pretty janky for a premium machine -- but luckily we rarely have to see the ugly sight of IE more than once on a new machine. For the most part this is just an Envy 13 bigged up, and that's nothing to complain about.

Sony Shows Off Primitive Surface Computer

Sony/ Atracsys also showed how the camera system can track facial movements and even calculate mood. The point seems to be that you could interact with a computer without actually touching it. This would be invaluable in an operating room, for example, where sterility must be maintained.
Sort of like Natal on the Xbox, apparently. Despite what they’re saying the camera tracking is capable of, Sony is making it look like a glorified Microsoft Surface. Check out the story link above to see the demo video.
Color us a little confused by this one. Sony has been showing off a surface computer of sorts. The system was constructed with Atracsys and utilizes a camera to track the locations of your fingers, meaning you don’t have to physically touch anything. For some reason, it’s being shown off on a table top… that you touch.
Sony had announced the $299 Reader Touch Edition and $199 Pocket Edition earlier this month. The Daily Edition, which was announced at a launch event at the New York Public Library, will retail for $399 and debut in December.
Sony today further bolstered its lineup of e-readers by announcing the Sony Reader Daily Edition - first in its stable to feature wireless connectivity (Wi-Fi and 3G). The Reader Daily Edition also features a 7-inch touch screen. In fact, wireless connectivity and a larger screen are the only notable features that separate it from the Reader Touch Edition.
Steve Haber, president of the Digital Reading Business Division at Sony, also announced that users will be able to borrow ebooks from the local library, with the borrowed books having an expiration period of 21 days. The new version of Sony’s online book store will let users search for libraries that loan electronic versions of their books.

Latest Mac OS X 10.6.2 beta build with Atom support

Well, it looks like reports that Apple might be killing Atom support in the next Snow Leopard update may have been slightly overblown, as the latest developer build of OS X 10.6.2 (10C535) has apparently restored support for the processor and simultaneously brightened the spirits of hackintoshers the world over.
What's more, there doesn't appear to be any explanation for the switch-a-roo from Apple which, as Electronista notes, could indicate that it was simply a bug or a temporary measure -- although it does of course also mean that Apple can just as easily flip the switch again if it sees fit (which seems like at least a 50 / 50 shot).
Mostly because hardware (Mac or PC) is nothing special. Apple supports the hardware they have shipped in their own products and the community has ported a lot of open source drivers to OSX. Netbooks are usually Linux friendly so they have really good support. Current netbook hardware is very similar to the first-gen MacBooks & Minis (Intel graphics/chipset) The CPU doesn't really matter much if it's x86 and supports SSE3.
From what I understand they can't remove support for it without patching (and encrypting) an otherwise pretty much open source kernel. The kernel recognises what instructions the processor can handle, and it it doesn't have an ID it just marks it has UNKNOWN.
ever since 2005 thats when i first installed OSX on a PC "10.4.3" apple has the power to stop or even make it more difficult for people to hack their OS on to a Non-Apple computers. but for some reason they just don't do it but for the most part i think its kind of a Win/Win for Apple the more people that use your product the better.

portable devices 3M unveils 3D panels

Among its many virtues gadget-wise, 2009 has seen 3D technology go from irritating to... well, not quite so irritating. Of course, with so many companies working to develop a satisfactory way to bring the third dimension to our TVs and computers, it's only a matter of time before we find a device that accomplishes the goal without giving us a headache.
And now 3M, who's been really digging their heels into display technology as of late, is debuting a 3D panel that eschews the glasses for something called conoscopy: the surface of the devices features a film with lenses on one side and prism structures on the other that display the corresponding left- and right-eye portions of the image. Currently available in both 9-inch and 2.8-inch LCD panels, the company is said to be gearing up for volume production, so it may not be long before they begin featuring on portable devices. Who knows? Maybe your dream of a 3D Gizmondo isn't dead after all! Get a closer look after the break.
Sumitomo 3M utilized the directionality so that the light from the left LED light source comes to the right eye and the light from the right LED light source comes to the left eye. And the company enabled to view 3D images with the naked eye by synchronizing the lighting of the left LED light source and the display of the image seen by the right eye (and the lighting of the right LED light source and the display of the image seen by the left eye).
Furthermore, it is possible to show 2D images by using the right and left LED light sources at the same time and displaying the same image for both the right and left eyes. Therefore, it is easy to switch between 2D and 3D images.

Acer will overtake HP in notebook sales

Much of that revenue growth is likely to come from an anticipated 50 percent gain in sales for low-cost Netbook PCs. As the economy improves, Wang expects to sell an ever greater number of low-priced, portable PCs, a segment that has been very kind to the company.
Acer recently outpaced Dell as the second largest PC seller in the world. Is No. 1 Hewlett-Packard next on the list? Acer Chairman J.T. Wang reportedly intends to ship 40 million notebooks in 2010, a number that could help the Taiwanese company challenge and even overtake current champ Hewlett-Packard for the top spot in portable PC sales.
Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expect sales to rise to $573 billion Taiwanese dollars ($18 billion) for the entire year, and $821 billion Taiwanese dollars ($25 billion) in 2012.
Acer has hit the portable PC market with a fury, releasing a string of small, light, low-cost products. Its latest upcoming entry is the Aspire 1820PT, a 11.6-inch notebook with a swivel screen that transforms it into a tablet computer.
Unlike most small Netbooks that size, the 1820PT will be powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, rather than the slower Atom chip. Wang believes that PC users have been turned off by the slowness of many light, ultrathin portables, including those made by Acer.
Acer already pounced on the smartphone market earlier this year with its Tempo line, all running Windows Mobile. But the Liquid will be its first phone to run the Android OS. And although Android phones have been slowly catching on, they naturally face an uphill battle against top players like the Apple iPhone.
The company has also been busy the past several years on a series of strategic acquisitions, eating up Gateway in 2007, Packard Bell in early 2008, and smartphone maker E-Ten a couple of months later.

Cloud computing need malpractice safeguards

Microsoft subsidiary Danger failed to put in even adequate safeguards for its customers' data. Amazon Web Services failed to discover an obvious problem that kept a loyal customer down for 20 hours. Coghead's agreement to sell to SAP without any provisions to continue support for existing customers.
The truth is that cloud computing means that now, more than ever, IT operations is a profession that has a very real economic and quality-of-life effect on its consumers--in very many ways much like health care or the law. I think it's time we hold ourselves as individual and organizations to similar standards that we expect from doctors, lawyers, and law enforcement. Our ethics must reflect an understanding of the responsibility we are being granted by the rest of society.
The instances above are examples of companies failing to follow well-known professional protocols, or putting the needs of the business ahead of the needs of the client. Heck, look at just about any cloud operator's terms of service, and you see paragraph after paragraph of text that basically states, "If something goes wrong, you can't blame us."
Pass "cloud consumer protection" laws. This was something that was briefly explored after I wrote my "Cloud Computing Bill of Rights" post in August of 2008. However, the folks who got involved at that time weren't a) vendors or b) policymakers, so we didn't get far.
The biggest issue with using the law to enforce professional culpability is that it requires government bureaucracy for enforcement. That bureaucracy doesn't exist today, and would be expensive to create.
Let me reemphasize that I don't love either option, but I do know something has to change. The public is placing an extremely high level of trust on "cloud" services, and there has to be more than the simple threat of loss of revenue to reflect this.
