Google Helps Sony's eBook Store

Earlier this year, Sony inked a deal with Google to bring half a million public domain books to its eBook Store, but apparently that was just the beginning. In a blog post, Sony announced its free public domain content offering from Google has now surpassed the 1 million title mark.
"We are now offering the widest array of eBooks today," Sony wrote. "From hot new releases to New York Times best sellers, to classics and hard to find manuscripts such as those available for free from Google."
All 1 million+ titles are available in EPUB format and work seamlessly with Sony's PRS-505 and PRS-700 eBook Readers, but not the PRS-500. For the time being, only U.S.-based readers have access to the plethora of books, likely a result of sticky licensing agreements and copyright law.

New released 1TB laptop hard drive

Currently, the largest desktop hard drive on the market is 2TB. The Scorpio Blue 1TB drive, though half the capacity, is still very impressive, considering the fact that a 2.5-inch laptop drive is much smaller than a 3.5-inch desktop drive. The new WD laptop drives are the first that use 333GB per platter technology.
The Scorpio Blue hard drives support the SATA2 (3Gbps) standard but have a thickness of 12.5 millimeters, as opposed to 9.5 millimeters in other 2.5-inch drives. This means the new drives will not fit in all 2.5-inch slots in laptops.
For this reason, WD designates them as a perfect fit for portable storage solutions and they'll be in WD's new My Passport Essential SE Portable USB drive. Other than capacity, the new Scorpio Blue drives also feature a set of advanced storage technologies, including:
WhisperDrive, which is WD's technology that uses seeking algorithms to produce one of the quietest 2.5-inch drives available ShockGuard, which helps the drive withstanding shock, such as accidental drops, and vibrations better
SecurePark, which is a mechanism that parks the recording heads off the disk surface during spin up and spin down and when the drive is off. This ensures that the recording head never touches the disk surface to improve long-term reliability
Both new drives come with 8MB of buffer memory and spin at 5,200rpm, which is slightly slower than the 5400rpm speed of mainstream laptop drives.

Sony will release Touchscreen Vaios in the Fall

Earlier in the week Sony announced that they’d be releasing two new Blu-ray megachangers, both of which will hold up to 400 discs.
The two new megachangers will come in the form of the $800 BDP-CX960, which will arrive sometime in the fall, and the BDP-CX7000ES, which will retail for $2,000 and arrive in August. Why the huge price difference? In short, the CX960 will only come equipped with standard Blu-ray player features, such as Profile 2.0 and onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. The CX7000ES will add 7.1 analog outputs, an RS-232 port, notably higher build quality, IR inputs and outputs, and supposedly higher quality video.
According to a recent interview with Sony’s Senior Vice President of Information Technology Products Mike Abary, there has been a recent push towards bringing touchscreen Vaios to consumers, as well as integrating them with a plethora of goodies.
The touchscreen Vaio, which will be known as the Vaio W, is reported to integrate the PlayStation Network to deliver movies and TV shows (possibly games) and come with eBook functionality. They’ll also be based off of Windows 7.
No official word yet on pricing, but you can expect them in time for the holidays.

Dell Adjusts Adamo Price

Three months after it arrived, Dell Adamo has received a price cut. A price cut for the Adamo became inevitable once Apple slashed the price of its svelte MacBook Air -perceived to be Adamo’s archrival - in June. Prices of all Adamo ultraportables have been lowered.
The basic Dell Adamo is now available for $1500 as opposed to its original price of $1999. This places it on level ground with the entry-level MacBook Air in terms of price. The basic version has a 1.2GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD. But at the other end of the spectrum, the top-end Adamo variant still remains pricier than its MacBook Air counterpart. The new price of the top-end Adamo is $2,230. It features a 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo processor, a 128GB SSD, and 4GB RAM.

Mac sales continue to propel Apple forward

Analysts were expecting $1.17 in earnings per share and revenues of $8.2 billion. The quarter ended June 27 was the best nonholiday quarter in terms of revenue and earnings for Apple--a bar that had been newly set during the previous quarter.
Apple also beat most analysts' expectations of its unit sales in its core businesses for the quarter. The company sold 2.6 million Macs, up 4 percent from a year ago, and 5.2 million iPhones, a 626 percent leap from a year ago. And even though the company's 10.2 million iPods sold during the quarter was better than expected, it's also Apple's first yearly drop in iPod sales, declining 7 percent.
Mac sales were very impressive for the quarter. Data provided by market research firm IDC showed the entire PC industry down more than 3 percent for April, May, and June, but Apple sold 4 percent more computers this quarter than it did during the same quarter in 2008. The company's laptops were responsible for that surge: MacBook and MacBook Pro shipments were up 13 percent.
Apple confirmed that much of that came late in the quarter after it transitioned to calling all of its unibody laptops MacBook Pros and cut prices across the board.
During the third quarter, Apple sold 10.2 million iPods, compared with 11 million a year ago. It turns out that the shifting appeal of the Shuffle, Nano, and Classic model iPods are to blame. But Apple apparently saw this coming. Those declining sales are "the reason we developed the iPod Touch," Oppenheimer said. "We expect our traditional MP3 players to decline overtime as we cannibalize ourselves with iPod Touch and iPhone."
Sales of the iPod Touch, on the other hand, grew 130 percent from the year before, he said. It reflects the growing emphasis Apple has been putting on the device that has become practically the same product as the iPhone, sans wireless phone service. It also drives revenue in a way that traditional MP3 model iPods do not: besides having access to the iTunes Store, iPod Touch users can also make purchases in the company's growing App Store.
Despite that positive outlook for the iPod Touch, the iPhone is clearly still the star of the company's lineup. The 5.2 million iPhones sold during the quarter was better than what many analysts were anticipating, although the 626 percent jump from a year ago is misleading--Apple didn't update the iPhone until July last year.
As predicted, Apple also put more money into the bank during the quarter, adding $2.2 billion to bring its cash holdings to $31.1 billion total. That's second only to Cisco Systems in the technology industry. But Oppenheimer didn't seem itching to spend it, on a company or on a broad new capital-intensive project, saying, "We continue to focus on the preservation of capital, which has served us well in the current environment," he said.
As usual, Cook did not have too much to add about future products coming from Apple. He did confirm that the updated Snow Leopard operating system is on track to be released later this summer.

Apple's quarterly progress report

It's been an eventful quarter for Apple, but can it keep up its momentum? We'll find out Tuesday when Apple releases its fiscal third-quarter earnings. Recent company news has been mixed, but certainly more positive than negative. During the quarter, which ended June 30, the company released the third-generation iPhone, the iPhone 3GS, which by all accounts, was a blockbuster. But its Mac and iPod divisions didn't experience the same kind of runaway success. Apple has had a string of successful quarters, even in the midst of the worst economic environment since the Great Depression.
Apple stock has jumped 21.4 percent, rising to $147.52, since its last earnings report in late April. Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook, who stood in for CEO Steve Jobs while Jobs was on medical leave for a liver transplant, has received high marks for keeping the company running smoothly in its leader's absence. Jobs has been back at work, at least part-time, since the end of June.
Apple announced it had sold 1 million iPhones worldwide in the first weekend the 3GS was on the market, and AT&T said the first day the phone was available marked the best sales day in the carrier's history. So while we know iPhone revenue will look good, Piper Jaffray says more specifically that it anticipates total iPhones sold for the quarter will be 5 million.
Mac revenue will show if price cuts are helping. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster says Apple sold 2.2 million Macs during the quarter, and says it is getting a boost from the price cuts it applied when it upgraded its entire aluminum MacBook line to MacBook Pros. But recent counts from IDC, which only tracks Apple's sales in the U.S., showed that Mac shipments dipped more than 12 percent during this quarter. The entire PC industry was down 3.1 percent worldwide.
Apple also continues to put away cash. As Brian Marshall of Broadpoint AmTech pointed out, Apple added $800 million in cash during the last quarter, bringing its total to $28.9 billion. Only Cisco's $29 billion in cash is better among technology companies. Among computer makers, Hewlett-Packard has $12 billion, Dell $9 billion. So analysts are going to want to know if they're investing it in a new product, a new company, or giving some back to shareholders.

IBM Posts Highest Second-Quarter Results

IBM this week announced its second-quarter 2009 results, noting diluted earnings of $2.32 per share compared with diluted earnings of $1.95 per share in the second quarter of 2008. That's a year-on-year increase of 18 percent, and according to IBM, the highest for any first, second, or third quarter in the company's history.
"As a result of our strategic transformation, we have a very strong business model that is delivering superior earnings, cash, and client value," said Samuel J. Palmisano, IBM chairman, president and chief executive officer.
Looking forward, IBM said it expects full-year 2009 earnings of at least $9.70 per share, up from its previous expectation of $9.20 per share. In addition, the company said it expects full-year 2009 pre-tax income for its Software segment to grow by double-digits and reach somewhere around $8 billion.

PC Market Suffers Decline

The worldwide PC market kept chugging onward against all economic odds, pushed in large part by an emerging netbook market that seemingly popped up overnight. But the ultraportable PCs could only do so much to stave off the inevitable, and according to market research firm iSuppli, the global PC market will suffer its first decline in 2009 since the Dot-Com bust of 2001.
"An annual decline in unit shipments is highly unusual in the PC market," observed Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst, compute platforms for iSuppli. "Even in weak years, PC unit shipments typically rise by single-digit percentages. The last decline -- in 2001 -- was a 5.1 decrease in unit shipments due to the extraordinary impact of the Dot-Com bust, which caused inflated IT spending levels from the previous years to collapse."
The market research firm predicts global PC shipments to dip to 287.3 million units in 2009, marking a 4 percent drop from the 299.2 million shipments in 2008. Ironically enough, a growing notebook market -- which we assume also includes netbooks -- might be part of the reason for the overall drop in PC shipments. While notebook PC shipments will rise by 11.7 percent, desktop PC shipments, including entry-level servers, is expected to plummet 18.1 percent and is being cited as the "primary factor driving the decline of the PC market in 2009," according to iSupply.
Dell’s plight in recent times is well documented: plunging demand, layoffs and factories closing down. For good measure, it has Acer breathing down its throat. Acer is currently the third largest PC manufacturer in the world, but its rise to the number two slot, currently occupied by Dell, is a mere formality now. Though Dell still doesn’t appear to have found a way to contain Acer, its CFO Brian Gladden believes the PC maker may soon be out of its sullen misery. He said that demand for Dell products, though still inconsistent, seems to have stabilized. He expects Dell’s earnings to be a bit better when it declares its second-quarter earnings in August.

Latest news: Apple tablet will have PA Semi chips

The Apple rumor mill kicked into high gear again Monday regarding the much discussed, yet still mythical Apple tablet. But a significant new piece of information emerged.
Tech blog Venture Beat is reporting that PA Semi, the chip company Apple bought last year whose specific function within Apple has thus far been unclear, will be designing the chips for an Apple tablet in house. Dean Takahashi wrote Monday, "PA Semi's team was split into two parts, one designing portable ARM-based processors for iPhones and iPods, and another designing a processor for the tablet device."
The PA Semi team has some renowned chip designers, and there have been recent Wall Street Journal reports that Steve Jobs has been personally overseeing the development of a tablet-like device, and that Apple also has a large chip design project in the works. Taken together, all three reports seem to make sense.
But the round of rumors regarding the supposed tablet from earlier in the day point to an October launch time frame for the device. There's no actual evidence for that. Apple did do a Mac notebook event in October last year, and it's conceivable it could do another one, bringing out a touch-screen tablet in time for the holidays.
There's no technical reason why 3G can't be added to a device like this. The main issue is the lack of truly affordable 3G data-only subscriptions. Since the iPhone and iPod touch have had wifi since the beginning, this rumored tablet would seemingly have wifi as well. Video chat might be an option, although as an application, more people would rather have a camera that's designed for still photography and video recording on a portable device.
The bottom line is, nobody knows when it will be released. It's like those paleontologists who say "this fossil is anywhere from 25 to 50 million years old." Yea, when you're talking ranges like that, anything is possible and it's hard to be wrong.

Lenovo's IdeaPad S10-2 reviewe: great battery life

Lenovo's S10-2 was a minor update to the original S10 (to put things nicely), but that's not to say it's not worth a look for those in the market for a 10-inch netbook. Boasting a slightly thinner, more beautified frame, the S10-2 also includes a tweaked keyboard, optional 3G, an extra USB port and none of the quirks that plagued the first edition. The benchmarking fiends over at HotHardware managed to sneak one of these things into their labs for testing, and while they largely found the S10-2 to be about the same as every other N270 + GMA 950 netbook out there, the 5.5 hour battery life was definitely impressive.
All told, the S10-2 was found to be solid from top to bottom, but the $350 price tag did feel a bit steep considering just how many alternatives are out there. Still, even with the positive vibes, it's hard to recommend buying a WinXP netbook now with Windows 7 (and thus, no hardware limitations) just around the bend. Tap the read link if you're jonesing for more.
Personally i think Lenovo should offer Track Points on all their laptops, not just the thinkpads. The trackpoint is exactly what netbooks need. If lenovo releases an x200 with some sort of graphics adapter that can pull off even the smallest of gaming, they will be god. I wish more ultraportables in the 12.1 inch size had some sort of gaming, what about you? What do you think? Just leave your message here,
