How to Build an Awesome Gaming PC this winter holiday

In many respects, it’s more difficult to build a great cheap PC than it is to build a more expensive one. In fact, the less money you have to spend, the more vital it is that every dollar delivers measurable value. With that in mind, we sat down with one simple goal: to build the best inexpensive, multipurpose PC that we would want to use ourselves.

An all-aluminum, toolless masterpiece of design the Rosewill R220 is not. It is an eminently serviceable budget mid-tower that will hold all the hardware you’ll ever need in your cheap PC. You should definitely beware of sharp edges when working in this humble enclosure, but you needn’t worry about your rig overheating, thanks to the case’s many fan mounts. And you won’t find a better looking case for $20.

While there are definitely better coolers out there, when you’re operating on a tight budget you can’t beat the low, low price of $0. The stock cooler that comes with the boxed retail version of a CPU is more than sufficient—at least until you’re ready to start overclocking. Stock coolers even come with a pre-applied thin layer of thermal paste, so you need not spend an extra penny.

Oh, times are good when you can get technology so current it still has that new PC smell on it. In this case, it’s the scent of our ATI Radeon HD 5770 and its DirectX 11 capability. As we wrote this, DX11 titles were just starting to trickle out. Even without DirectX 11, this card is a capable performer in DX9 and DX10 games, too.

While there are higher-rated 24x DVD-RW drives out there, in the real world, where there’s no 24x media, Samsung’s SH-S223C is still a top dog. With great burning and reading performance, and the best DVD ripping speeds we’ve tested yet, this is the DVD-RW drive to beat. You say you wanted Blu-ray in your uber-cheap machine? It just ain’t worth the money, honey.

The result is an incredibly lean, but still powerful machine featuring a quad-core CPU, a GPU capable of playing anything on a 22-inch panel, and… well, you’ll have to read on to see the rest. Rest assured, though, this is a machine that would be welcome in any of our homes, whether we’re playing games, editing video, touching up photos, ripping movies, or simply surfing the Internet. Oh yeah, we’ll also show you how to assemble the components like a pro, one easy-to-follow step at a time.

Apple Places Order for 10-inch Tablet Displays

The site's sources went on to name iPhone-display supplier Wintek as the company Apple may call upon to lessen Innolux's burden. Foxconn Group subsidiaries seem to be in the thick of things as far as Apple's tablet is concerned. G-Tech Optoelectronics, another Foxconn subsidiary, will reportedly provide a glass strengthening process for the tablet's display.

Is Apple finally on the verge of making its long-rumored tablet official? The much awaited announcement could come as early as January, according to Taiwanese site Digitimes, which has a monopoly on tech rumors emanating from the region. Apple has reportedly finalized Foxconn Group's panel-making subsidiary Innolux as the supplier of the 10-inch panels that will be featured in its tablet.

The report goes as far as claiming that Apple delayed the launch of the tablet until the first quarter of 2010 as it wanted more time to optimize the strength of the tablet's display.

It’s almost surreal, the experience surrounding reporting on Apple’s rumored tablet. Firstly, because there is no such device. Apple, in fact, denies it exists. And there is no credible third-party evidence to suggest otherwise. But that doesn’t stop supposed smart guys in technology reporting to maintain otherwise. And, to top it off, conclude it is (not will be) the coolest thing ever.

For example, Laura DiDio, an analyst for Information Technology Intelligence Corp. (ITIC), says “This will be the next big thing. Apple is going to wow everybody with the tablet.” Apple’s phantom tablet, according to DiDio, will have a 10-inch or 12-inch screen, high-end graphics process, Wi-Fi or 3G, a web cam, and will be able to do everything: ebook, Internet, games, movies, and music. There’ll be dozens of third-party apps available for it.

OLPC plans to release the XO 1.5 in January 2010

Before getting to that point, OLPC plans to release the XO 1.5 in January 2010. OLPC says it will sport the same industrial design as the 1.0, but will come configured with a VIA processor instead of AMD. It will also have more memory. OLPC is targeting $200 as the price point, but says that could fluctuate with memory prices.

Finally, 2012 will be the year OLPC says it will deliver a notebook "well below $100," the XO 3.0. This one will take a "totally different approach" and "feature a new design using a single sheet of flexible plastic." OLPC claims it will be unbreakable.

We've been hearing promises of a sub-$100 laptop from the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) organization since it began, but it has yet to deliver one. That won't change in 2010, or even 2011, but come 2012, OLPC feels confident it will finally reach that milestone, according to the company's roadmap.

Then in 2011, the XO 1.75 will make its debut, and once again, it will feature the same overall design as previous models, but with a rubber bumper and an 8.9-inch touchscreen. OLPC plans to use an ARM processor for this one and is shooting for a price point of no more than $150.

To put it onto perspective, the money spent on R&D, delivery, marketing, etc, could've been better spent on the basics such as food, shelter, school, wages, security, and books. Throwing a laptop at a poor kid doesn't necessitate learning. And there's reports where these kids are using the laptop to surf porn. Hardly an education tool.

Top Cell Phones, Sites, and Brands of '09 from Nielsen

What web sites are all those cell phone users accessing? Would you be shocked that Google Search ranked number one? Me either. Following in second place is Yahoo! Mail, then Gmail, the Weather Channel, and Facebook. Only ordinal ranks are reported, so overall popularity is unknown.

The top brand--surprise--was Yahoo!. (You thought it was going to be Google, didn’t you?) Google came in second, followed by MSN/Windows Live/Bing, AOL Media Network, and the Weather Channel.

It’s an odd top ten list, as it only covers the period January to September (October for cell phones), but the top mobile phone is the Apple iPhone, with 4 percent of the “embedded base of all subscribers.” RIM’s BlackBerry 8300 series comes in at number two, with 3.7%, followed by Motorola’s RAZR V3 series, with 2.3%. (Nielsen doesn’t report cumulative brand usage, so these rankings are misleading from that perspective.)

And lastly, video channels: the big ‘winner’ here is YouTube. The runners up are Fox Interactive Media, the Weather Channel, Comedy Central, and CBS. (What’s with the Weather Channel? Weather’s pretty obvious when you’re in it. Why do you need a channel to verify the experience?)

Yeah! Another top-ten list for 2009. This one’s from Nielsen, the kindly folks who track our TV viewing habits, and now bless us with four lists for mobile phones: phone brand, web sites accessed, brands accessed, and video channels accessed.

Sony Signs a Deal With News Corp

Exact sales numbers for e-ink devices are hard to hammer down, but analysts currently forecast the Kindle alone will bring home about $301.4 million in revenue for Amazon in 2009, and this number is expect to grow as high as $1.8 billion by 2012. Only time will tell if the Kindle will remain the dominant platform, but clearly its still anyone game at this point.

According to Reuters, Sony will offer monthly subscriptions to the Wall Street Journal for $14.99, MarketWatch for $10.99, and the New York Post for $9.99. It seems as though Sony believes the e-ink editions formatted for their devices can command a slight premium since the Wall Street Journal online can be viewed from any web browser for less than $8 a month at today’s prices.

This represents a pretty significant price delta, but it likely has something to do with the additional formatting that needs to go into reorganizing the content for a smaller screen.

In an increasingly overcrowded e-reader market, content will likely decide the ultimate winner. It worked for Apple, and Sony is hoping they are on track as well by signing new deals with News Corp to add content from the Wall Street Journal, MarketWatch, and the New York Post to its e-ink devices.

MSI Boosts Ultrathin with X-Slim X600 Pro review

Including the 6-cell battery, the X-600 Pro weighs a scant 4.63 pounds and boasts a thickness of just 2.5cm, or a little under an inch. Adding to the sex appeal is a luminous scratch-resistant coating with silver accents.
On the hardware front, the X600 Pro packs the "latest" Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB of DDR2 memory, up to 640GB of storage space, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330, 1.3MP webcam, optional Blu-ray drive, optional Bluetooth, 2-in-1 media card reader, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, three USB 2.0 ports (one of which serves double-duty as an eSATA port), HDMI, and Windows 7 Home Premium.
If you haven't gotten it by now, thin is definitely in, at least in the world of PCs. One company who's already been around the ultrathin block a time or two is MSI, who has just added its new X-Slim X600 Pro to its lineup of super skinny notebooks.
The mobile platform has been good to Asus, which further expects that its combined notebook shipments will reach 7.35 billion units in the first three quarters of 2009, and a respectable12 million units by the end of 2009. Driving those shipments is Asus' uber popular Eee PC line, with netbooks accounting for about 40 percent of the total shipments, Shen said.
Someone's feeling ambitious, and that someone is Asus. According to company president Jerry Shen, the multifaceted manufacturer expects to ship 600,000 ultra-thin notebooks by the end of the year and could ship as many as one million units.

Apple will ramp up production on its long-rumored tablet

Apple plans to produce as many as 1 million units per month. So assuming it needs five to six weeks of inventory before launch, we can expect it to arrive at market sometime in March or April. In preparation for that day, the company has evidently been evangelizing the device to the publishing industry.

Noting dissension in the ranks, Reiner adds, "As innovative as it is, we believe the Kindle has disgruntled the publishing industry (book, newspaper, and magazine) by demanding exclusivity, disallowing advertising, and demanding a wolfish cut of revenue. The tablet is set to change that. It should also make e-books more relevant for education by simplifying functions such as scribbling marginalia."

"Contacts in the U.S. tell us Apple is approaching book publishers with a very attractive proposal for distributing their content," Reiner wrote in a note to clients today. "Apple will split revenue 30/70 (Apple/publisher); give the same deal to all comers; and not request exclusivity. We believe the typical Kindle/publisher split is 50/50, rising to 30/70 if Kindle is given ebook exclusivity."

That's the word from Oppenheimer analyst Yair Reiner who says his checks into Apple's supply chain indicate that "the manufacturing cogs for the [device] are creaking into action." According to Reiner, the tablet will have a 10.1-inch multitouch LCD display and a price point of $1,000.

The hands-on Noble's Nook review

First and foremost, while the Nook features the same 6-inch E-ink screen (600x800 pixels; 16 shades of gray) as the Kindle, it includes a separate, capacitive, color touch screen (144 x 480 pixels) that allows you to navigate content and use a virtual keyboard for typing searches and annotations. Furthermore, on top of its free AT&T 3G wireless connection, the Nook packs in Wi-Fi connectivity and a memory expansion slot; you get 2GB of internal memory, but can add up to an additional 16GB via the microSD card slot.
When Barnes & Noble unveiled the Nook, the first Android-powered e-book reader, a lot of people were excited, because it appeared to offer some key competitive advantages over Amazon's Kindle e-reader.
And finally, Barnes & Noble offers an e-book-lending option (for participating titles) and the capability to browse the full text of e-books on your Nook if you're in a Barnes & Noble brick-and-mortar store (the latter feature is due to launch in early 2010). Unfortunately, both the lending and in-store browsing features come with some significant restrictions.
Caveats notwithstanding, those features are nice extras, but the big questions are: how much of a difference do they really make in the overall user experience, and are they enough to push the Nook to the top of the e-book reader heap? Alas, the answer, you'll soon find out, isn't as clear cut as it might seem.

Dell is reorganizing the company around its newest product

Dell has recently fallen even further behind its once-lofty perch as the world's biggest producer of PCs. It is now No. 3 behind Hewlett-Packard and Acer, both of which offer consumers computers and smartphones. The company is, like most consumer hardware makers, increasingly moving to smaller mobile computers like smartphones and laptops as the desktop market has cratered.
Dell is forming a new communications business unit to be helmed by Ron Garriques, a former Motorola executive brought in to run Dell's consumer business two years ago, Reuters first reported Friday. Dell officials confirmed that the consumer group will be folded into the small and medium business group run by Steve Felice.
Dell started selling its first smartphone at the end of November in China and Brazil only. The new unit run by Garriques will develop hardware and software for phones and other mobile Internet devices.
I like the look of this.. how I pray that this phone will let you any MobileOS in full capacity and become the true open-source phone. Businesses will go crazy over this.
Also, I wonder if Dell will go back after Business Communications with this. They had plans to sell the Inter-Tel 7000 product before Mitel bought Inter-tel.

LCD Displays will Cost More in December

The sources note that monitor panels have already dropped below costs, so there really isn't much room for any more price drops. This has caused vendors to replenish their stock.
If you're hoping to score an LCD monitor upgrade in time for Christmas vacation, you may not want to procrastinate until the last minute. Citing anonymous industry sources, DigiTimes says LCD displays could go up a tick in price this month as retail channels start to restock their inventories.
There wasn't a lot of monitor growth in the third quarter, largely the result of rabid demand for notebooks and netbooks. Because of this, retailers ended up with high monitor inventories and lower prices. LCD makers responded by cutting their supply to the monitor segment. Know of a good deal on an LCD monitor? Share the link in the comments section below.
I wanted to get new monitors for both my desk and my sim racing cockpit and had been searching for good prices for months to no avail. This past weekend my home server died so I went to Fry's to get a replacement and finally yielded to temptation and got a 24" LG for $249 and a 27" LG for $379. That's more than I wanted to pay but I trust the brand and I'm happy with the products.
My theory is that all the production capacity has gone to producing flat-screen TVs so the price of larger monitors has gone up because demand is exceeding supply. Maybe intentionally, maybe not, but a couple years ago, I got a 26" LG for about $260 and despite the prices of most stuff going down because of the economic mess, the prices of monitors hasn't budged.
Also, if you order a monitor you don't know what you're getting because parts (screens mainly) vary to what's available to the manufacturer at the time (even in the same model). Some being vastly inferior to others.

Dell style, the new Precision M6500 17-inch mixes Core i7 with business savvy

In typical Dell style, the new Precision M6500 17-inch workhorse laptop has shown up on the company's website with nary a peep of self-congratulatory PR from Round Rock. Notable as the successor to the well-juiced M6400 and its even gaudier Covet variant, the M6500 boasts wallet-busting specs like a Core i7-920XM allied to a maximum of 16GB DDR3 memory speeding along at 1,333MHz, a choice of ATI FirePro M7740 or NVIDIA Quadro FX 3800M workstation graphics chips.
Support for up to three storage devices with optional RAID configurations, and a 1920 x 1200 LED-backlit display. The machine is not quite yet available to purchase, meaning it's safe to go beyond the read link without fearing any heart-stopping sticker shock.
This is a great laptop, the W700ds has mostly gimmicky features (like the tablet that's too small to be useful and the second screen that is too small, has worse colors, and is less bright than the primary screen), while these Dells focus on performance and useful features.
