Logitech takes the mouse prize with Darkfield sensor

The results were conclusive in our mouse head-to-head. Logitech's Performance Mouse MX and its new Darkfield sensor boldly went where Microsoft's Explorer Mouse and its BlueTrack sensor could not. We tried two different glass tabletops and Logitech's new mouse tech had no trouble maintaining signal integrity. Microsoft's mouse stopped dead.
Logitech was also able to handle all of the new surfaces Microsoft's BlueTrack blazed when it surpassed the traditional laser sensor at the end of 2008. And while Microsoft is right to point out that its BlueTrack mice are available for less, Logitech's $99 Performance Mouse MX not only gets you the best mouse sensor on the market, it also happily marries its wireless and rechargeable battery technologies into a seamless whole.

Touchscreen Netbook with Intel's Next-gen Atom

MSI has confirmed it is working on a convertible touchscreen netbook based on Intel’s upcoming Pine Trail platform. The confirmation comes a few days after a report on Digitimes had hinted at such a product. MSI hopes that its touchscreen netbook, called the Wind U150, will be the first to feature the Pine Trail platform, which it believes will debut at CES in January, 2010.
However, the word from the horse’s mouth is that Pine Trail will be shipped to customers before the sun sets on 2009. The U150 will feature a 10-inch touchscreen and run Windows 7. Pine Trail is the codename for the next generation of the Intel Atom.
It will have the CPU, GPU and memory controller on the same die. This chip, codenamed “Pineview”, will be clubbed with a second chipset codenamed “Tiger Point”. Being a two chip solution, it will be more energy efficient than its predecessor.
Although HP and Dell are planning to introduce new ultra-thin notebook models, based on Intel’s Consumer Ultra Low-Voltage (CULV) platform, in the fourth quarter, Digitimes Research has forecast a rough road ahead for the segment. According to Digitimes’ research wing, global ultra-thin notebook shipments are expected to account for 4% of all notebook shipments in 2009. It anticipates that 6 million ultra-thin notebooks will be shipped this year. It blamed their high prices for their low desirability with respect to netbooks. “In terms of the price/performance ratio, the ultra-thin notebooks' components carry higher prices than most of the standard parts, but their working performance is only slightly better than netbooks,” said Joanne Chien, senior analyst at Digitimes.

Wind Top All-In-One Desktop with AMD Inside

First announced at CeBIT earlier this year, MSI today officially launched its new Wind Top all-in-one AE2010 PC with a 20-inch, 1600 x 900 touchscreen display.
Similar in style to the company's previous AE1900, the new AE2010 beefs up the hardware with an AMD Athlon X2 dual-core 3250e processor, ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics, 4GB of DDR2-533 memory, a 320GB hard drive spinning at 5400RPM, a tray-load DVD burner, 4-in-1 card reader, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, 1.3MP webcam, 6 USB 2.0 ports, and an eSATA port.
According to MSI, noise never ramps up to more than 26 decibels thanks to an "ultra-silent, state-of-the-art cooling system." And on the energy front, MSI claims its all-in-one sips 75 percent less juice than traditional desktop PCs.
Acer, the world’s #3 PC manufacturer, is on the brink of releasing a new netbook to accompany the Aspire One, and an all-in-one desktop computer that’s aimed directly at competing with Asus’s Eee Top and Apple’s iMac.
The netbook will measure 10.2”, cost roughly $500 and will be powered by Intel’s Atom processor. It’s reported that the system will include Vista and offer storage capacities of up to 320GB. Thanks to the size of the screen, it’s claimed that the display will sport a horizontal resolution of 1024 pixels, allowing users to view the entire width of most web pages.

Asus Readies Ion-Based Nettop and Eee Keyboard

According to news and rumor site DigiTimes, Asus plans to keep busy this fall launching a number of new products. Among them are an Nvidia Ion-based Eee Box, Eee Top all-in-one PC, and two ultra-thin notebooks under its U/UX series.
The 20-inch Eee Top will come with an Intel dual-core Atom 330 processor and cost around $670. Details on the Ion-based rig remain sparse, though it will reportedly sell for a little over $300. Both of these -- along with the ultra-thin notebooks -- will launch in September.
A month later, Asus plans to launch the Eee Keyboard for somewhere between $400 and $500. The Eee Keyboard will work as a fully-functional PC and sport a wireless connection hub.
FInal specs might still change between now and when it releases, but as it stands, the Eee Keyboard will come with an Intel Atom N270 processor (1.6GHz, 533MHz frontside bus, 512KB L2 cache), a 32GB SSD, 1GB of RAM, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth, HDMI, stereo speakers, and a diminutive 5-inch 800x480 touchscreen display/trackpad combo.

Asus Ranks the Highest in Computer Reliability

For the second time in a row, Asus has come out ranked No. 1 in reliability for personal computers, according to Rescuecom's 2009 Second Quarter Top 5 Computer Reliability Report.
"Because Asus just introduced the newest version of the EEE Laptop last fall, the original predicted computer reliability of this laptop has been somewhat up in the air," says David A. Milman, Rescuecom's founder and CEO. "However, a good eight months later, we're still receiving the fewest calls for computer repair and support with Asus, while their market share is increasing."
Rescuecom ranks computer reliability based on the number of computers a company ships versus the number of computer repair and service calls Rescuecom receives. According to the report, of the top 5 companies, Rescuecom received the fewest number of calls for Asus at 0.6 percent. Apple, which ranked No. 2 on the list, received the third most calls with 2.2 percent, which is more than Asus and IBM/Lenovo combined.
Maybe I've just been lucky, but I've never had a piece of Asus hardware fail before I upgraded to newer parts or systems. I'm still using a Pentium II 450 with an Asus motherboard for a Linux server. To me, Asus is quality stuff-and no I don't work for them.

7-inch Touchscreen Netbook Features

Singapore-based Suzuki Technology – not to be confused with its automobile-making namesake - has trotted out a 7-inch touchscreen netbook that can also double up as a tablet PC. Its 7-inch display can be folded in a manner so as to overlie the keyboard. The Neutron 701 MNI enters tablet PC mode once the screen is folded to conceal the keyboard.
The 701 MNI may not be for tetchy users as it features an Intel Atom Z520 1.33GHz processor, which is infamous for its lack of speed. Other notable specs include up to 4GB RAM, an Expresscard Slot, three USB 2.0 ports, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a 1.3 MP webcam, and a quaint 56K modem. Suzuki still hasn’t divulged the price of the 701 MNI.
Thanks to the Duo Wireless Digital Pen Mouse, all it takes is a clip on sensor and a wireless pen to make the conversion from mouse to touchscreen. Clipping the sensor onto the top of your screen will allow you to doodle all you want, directly on your LCD. Though, at $44 it’s suspected that the resolution might not be up to par with other kits. But if you’re looking for a very cheap alternative (cheaper than some traditional mice), it’s definitely worth checking out.

Apple tablet keyboard is already here

The reason why Netbooks have been successful is that they're cheap, and their form factor makes sense, especially for those looking to take a basic, lightweight computer out with them on the road--or just out to the patio. It's a pretty simple equation and you'd think that Apple would just follow the Netbook trend and come out with something that didn't break the mold but was sexier, a little zippier, and cost an extra $100-$200 in so-called Apple tax. What I'm talking about is a 10-inch $600-$700 Apple Netbook with a keyboard.
Alas, that probably won't cut it for Apple. Low-end computers just aren't in the company's DNA, so rumor has it we're looking at a $700-$800 tablet, which, to guys like Rafe and me, doesn't make a tremendous amount of sense. But at same time I also have enough faith in Apple to realize that if it's going to come out with such a product, it's probably going change the tablet's paradigm to the point where it suddenly makes abundant sense.
To a degree, this is what Brooke Crothers argued in his piece, "Why an Apple tablet will succeed." It was meant to be a counterpoint to Rafe's article and featured some potential specs for a fantasy tablet of the near future. I appreciate Brooke's point of view as well.
As the rumors and concept images continue to swirl, much of the debate around Apple's rumored device has focused on the touch screen and the prospect of typing on a virtual keyboard, much like one does with the iPhone and iPod Touch, which some users view as mini tablets. However, it's hard to imagine that this would be the best experience for doing serious work, and I know lots of people who still struggle with the iPhone's keyboard (my father owns an iPhone and it's a little bit painful to watch him type on it).
But as Rafe pointed out, there's another possibility. "Of course," he wrote, "you'll probably be able to plug a keyboard into any of these yet-to-be-released tablets...but you'll pay extra for the hardware and it'll mean more gear to keep track of and prop up on your desk."
To some it would seem incongruous for Apple to put out a keyboardless device that would have an optional keyboard (The Newton had one, which is maybe why Steve Jobs hated it). That said, there are a lot of folks who wouldn't mind using a wireless Bluetooth keyboard to connect to their iPhones or iPod Touchs, but Apple has yet to offer the Bluetooth-keyboard profile that would allow you to do it. So why would it allow it with a larger, jumbo iPod Touch?

Sony's Party-shot dock crashes faux festivities

You probably already know exactly how each and every one of your friends would feel about seeing an autonomous robot photographer at your next shindig. Crave Asia managed to snag one of Sony's new Party-shot docks for the office, and while the set up is described in an almost heartbreaking tone -- "We've got the lights, we've got the disco ball, but unfortunately we've got no friends," says the narrator -- you do get a pretty good feel for how the gizmo would work in a more celebratory setting.
The swivel seemed to move a lot slower than we expected it to, although we can't be convinced without seeing it firsthand in a setting with more than two people. Now all that's left to prepare for is how to convince your camera shy guests that there'll be enough narcissistic attendees blocking the lens anyway. Video beyond the gates of the read link.

Will Dell beat the iPhone?

When the subject of a rumored Dell cell phone came up at the company’s financial analyst meeting this week, Dell indicated there was one coming, but gave few details on it. So far, all we know for sure is that it will be based on LTE, or 4G network technologies, putting the timing for the device in 2011 for appreciable volume (though it is at least possible we could see it in late 2010). I figured it might be fun to chat about what Dell needed it to be, if it was going to beat the iPhone. Given that Dell’s Digital Jukebox got its butt kicked by the iPod, I’m thinking the company is looking for a rematch, and could do it right this time. But what would “do it right” mean, and how do you beat the iPhone?
One other thing that the iPhone, Blackberry, and Palm Pre have in common is that all their vendors tend to own and assure the customer experience. They also demand generation (marketing) for their respective phones, and Palm is actually doing a rather impressive job promoting their phone at the moment. I think they would be doing vastly better if they sold through multiple carriers, like Blackberry does, as opposed to just through Sprint. Sprint, unfortunately, is still the least-liked vendor in the U.S., and that has to hurt the Pre’s potential until Palm moves to additional carriers next year.
Dell certainly can own the customer. They typically do a better job of this in the PC market than any other vendor, because most of their products, unlike competitors’, are sold directly from the company. But cell phone service providers tend to complicate things, and it isn’t clear if Dell can, or even wants to, step up and play this game like Apple, Palm, and RIM do.
But for Dell to have an advantage, it has to come at this market from its core strength, which is PC sales. If Dell’s device makes a compelling PC accessory and connects solidly back to the Dell line of laptop products, the synergy could give it an advantage over others. However, Apple did already take a big step in this direction with MobileMe.

It's not relevent to this thread, but the Pre threads are usually hijacked by fanbois so what the hell. There are 32 "official" apps in the App Catalog right now. That number is expected to go up soon, although there's no telling by how much. There is also a decent size homebrew community creating quality apps independent of the App Catalog.
