MSI, the latest entries to its Classic series notebooks

Looks aside, it's what's on the inside of these 14-inch notebooks that count, and it all begins with Intel's Core i5 platform. The CX420 also sports up to 4GB of DDR3 800 or 1066 memory, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 graphics with a 1GB frame buffer, up to 500GB of HDD storage, a 4-in-1 card reader, 1.3MP webcam, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, 10/100/1000 Ethernet LAN, 6- or 9-cell battery, and Windows 7 Home Premium
The CR420 boasts an almost identical spec sheet, except the built-in graphics share the frame buffer with system memory, and the onboard Ethernet LAN tops out at 10/100.
Forget about over-the-top aesthetics and loud color schemes, MSI is having no part of it, at least not with the latest entries to its Classic series notebooks. Instead, MSI's new CX420 and CR420 keep it relatively simple with an "exclusive Cross-Hatch Color Film Print patterning" the company claims gives them a "fashionable appearance."
Meeting those goals might not be too hard to do. MSI's notebook shipments took a serious hit by inventory issues in the first half of 2009, Hsu noted, leaving the company to play catch-up for the rest of the year. Even so, MSI's branded notebook shipments were still higher than those in 2008.
As 2010 rolls along, Hsu said consumers can expect more notebook models with varying specifications, rather than trying to achieve significant shipment volumes with just a handful of models.

Razer's Two-Faced Vespula Mousepad review

In addition to the two sides, the Vespula also comes with a gel-filled memory conformance wrist rest. The whole thing measures 300mm x 240mm x 4mm (length x width x height). Being two-faced doesn't have to be a bad thing, and that's exactly what Razer is banking on with the release of its Vespula "gaming grade" mousepad, a dual-sided mat giving gamers the choice between speed or control.
"The Razer Vespula was designed with gamers in mind that need a single solution for every game they play. Different genres call for different gameplays. The advanced technology in the improved dual-sided mouse mat gives gamers the choice of a smooth Speed Surface or a textured Control Surface, which delivers just that flexibility," said Robert Krakoff, president, Razer USA. "The Control Surface is great for games that use small, precise movements, while the Speed Surface is an ideal match for gamers that prefer large, sweeping motions."
Ambidextrous and left-handed mouse users can stop reading now. That's because Razer's newest gaming rodent -- the Imperator -- was designed exclusively with righties in mind.
In addition to its right-handed ergonomics and adjustable side buttons, the new Imperator boasts a 5600dpi 3.5G laser sensor, 50g acceleration (up to 200 inches per second), 1000Hz ultrapolling with a 1ms response rate, on the fly sensitivity adjustment, and Teflon feet.

Apple looks at the digital marketplace and it sees great potential

Apple’s request, which would definitely help its bottom line, is compatible with the preferences of an emergent class of digital consumers. They want their content. They want it now. And they want it cheap. These preferences, however, aren’t compatible with today’s content providers, who generate revenue from a variety of sources, and have interests that directly conflict with the emergent digital marketplace. For example, Comcast is about to swallow NBC, which makes it a content provider and a conduit for content. Comcast can’t let digital consumption threaten either. As long as this remains true, realization of the potential of the digital marketplace will be a long time coming.
For TV networks it’s not that simple. They draw revenue from over-the-air broadcasts, cable, DVD releases, and other pay-for-content providers. While revenues overall may be down, they don’t see how Apple’s proposal works for them. Sure, they may see additional revenue if digital demand picks-up in response to lower prices. But, they also risk taking a hit if there’s a concomitant drop in demand elsewhere. That’s a risk they don’t appear eager to take.
Apple looks at the digital marketplace and it sees great potential. There are more digital consumers than ever, more options for consumption than ever, and more content than ever. But, the digital marketplace is underperforming. Going back to Econ 101, Apple suspects the lack of demand is related to price--specifically, prices are too high--especially for video. To open the floodgates of demand, Apple is asking TV networks and studios to half the price of their content on the iTunes Store: from $1.99 to $0.99 per episode.

Hewlett-Packard has partnered with Ominfone to distribute the U.K. music

MusicStation Desktop will be preloaded on 16 HP models sold in the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, Belgium, The Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland. The service will be free for 14 days, at which time users can sign up for a monthly subscription, which will cost 8.99 pounds ($14.47) in the U.K. and 9.99 euros ($14.10) in most of the other countries.
Hewlett-Packard has partnered with Ominfone to distribute the U.K. music provider's MusicStation service on PCs sold in Europe, Ominfone announced Sunday. MusicStation competes with Apple's iTunes download service and the Spotify streaming service, as well as Amazon.com's MP3 Download Store.
The service, which boasts unlimited access to more than 6.5 million music tracks from the four major recording labels, distributes music in DRM-protected WMA files. Songs are downloaded to the user's computer for online and offline play, but the songs are playable only as long as the subscription is active.

Acer's gunning for top spot in the global PC market

This will especially be true if the notebook market continues to grow, which is a sector where Acer thrives. The company said it shipped about 33-34 million notebooks last year, and thinks it it will ship 40 million in 2010.
Or so says Acer's outspoken Chairman Wang Jeng-tang and President Gianfranco Lanci. In fact, it seems like everyone over at Acer likes to beat their chest, as evidenced by the company's founder earlier this week saying that US-brand PCs will be extinct in 20 years, "just like what happened to US television brands."
Acer certainly talks the talk, and the problem for its competitors is that, for the most part, the company also walks the walk. Take note HP, because Acer's gunning for your top spot in the global PC market, a place the company thinks it will reach by 2012.
HP is one of those US brands, and also happens to be the largest maker of PCs on the planet with a 19.3 percent share. Acer, who jumped ahead of Dell not that long ago for the No. 2 spot, holds 13 percent of the global PC market, and it's not unrealistic that Acer would become the top dog in two years.
if Dell and HP do go extinct in the desktop market, it's not because their american, but because they rip you off. not so much HP, they're workstations are pretty nice. but Dell is just a freakin joke when it comes to customizing the right pc; they take you to the cleaners when it comes to things like ram and hard-drives, and if your customizing a pc on their site and want a part they don't offer, tuff nuts, you have to get what they offer and replace it yourself after.

PCs will be Extinct in 20 Years in US?

Acer's been on a roll the past year, nudging ahead of US-based Dell in a photo-finish as the world's second-largest computer vendor, and should Acer continue to fly high, it could pass HP, another US computer maker, for the top spot by 2011.
"The trend for low-priced computers will last for the coming years," said Shih. "But US computer makers just don't know how to put such products on the market... US computer brands may disappear over the next 20 years, just like what happened to US television brands."
Those of you sporting a PC made in the the good ol' U.S. of A. may want to take note - two decades from now, you'll have no choice but to buy a foreign-made computer. Why? Because according to Acer founder Stan Shih, U.S. computer brands are on their way out.
Blame our gov't for this one folks. High taxes and other things made our companies outsource it's products to these other countries that are now taunting us. With that said though, yeah overseas crap is cheaper for the most part, but that's because they get away with slave labor. I mean, paying thier employees next to nothing. No insurance, no vacation, and no raises unless they are a total genius and graduated from an american college, then and only then they'll pay em good. If it weren't for us americans, most of those coutries would be under chinese or japanese rule. Not to mention getting our butt kicked by North Korea so South Korea could still exist. Screw you Acer.

FIC Announces new SVE00 Netbook, Pinetrail Chipset review

It also packs lots of connectivity options. There’s Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth, WiMax and HSDPA. The computer can be purchased with either Windows 7 or Linux for the more adventurous. On a more superficial note, it’s a pretty nice looking netbook, right? No pricing has been announced.
We’re finally starting to see some Pinetrail netbooks hit the market, and that’s what makes the new SVE600 of note. FIC has just announced the new netbook, which will have the Atom N450 CPU clocked at 1.66GHz. It comes with the customary 1GB of RAM and 10.1 inch screen. Storage is nice though, with up to a 500GB hard drive, or 32GB SSD.
FIC's just launched its new Pinetrail netbook, the FIC SVE600. This little guy (which measures 10.1-inches) isn't exactly ground-breaking, but that Atom N450 is still new enough to spark a little interest, right? The SVE600 boasts the aforementioned 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 CPU, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a choice of an either up to 500GB HDD or an up to 32GB SSD, plus WiFi, BGN, Gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth WiMax, and HSDPA. You'll also get your choice of either Windows 7 or Linux OSs. There's no word on pricing yet, but we'll let you know when we do. There's another beauty shot after the break.
According to news and rumor site DigiTimes, Taiwan-based netbook vendors have started slashing prices for their netbooks built around Intel's Atom N270 and N280 processors as demand shifts over to ultra-thins. This includes the major players, such as Acer, Asus, BenQ, and MSI.

U.S. Government's Feet to the Fire over Seized Laptops

"This lawsuit will not seek monetary damages for individuals who have been searched; instead, it will focus exclusively on fixing the unconstitutional policy," wrote Jennifer Granick, civil liberties director and lawyer with the EFF.

To help bolster their chances in court, the groups are in search of lawyers whose laptops or other electronic gadgets were subject to search and/or seized at U.S. points of entry and exit.

The U.S. government's practice of seizing laptops through random searches at border crossings is again coming under scrutiny, this time by a pair of civil rights groups who are on the hunt for potential plaintiffs.

The groups include the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, both of which have the support of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF).

The issue to me is how unreasonable some of the searches have turned out to be and how much power these officers have over said materials. This applies to us all, not just foreigners entering/exiting our borders.

For example, there have been several cases where instead of a simple search the item to be searched is seized. Laptops, celphones, etc. are taken away and not returned for months on end. If you are on a business trip imagine the ramifications. Your whole lifelihood depends on the contents of your laptop/phone.

HP-Microsoft deal, how do you think

Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard have announced a new three-year pact worth $250 million. Although their friendship goes back many years, this new deal is the acme of their proximity. They plan to conquer the enterprise market by bundling their hardware and software together, with the new partnership spanning engineering, sales and marketing. The fact that the two companies are leaders in their respective industries explains why they chose to name their new partnership “Frontline.”

HP CEO Mark Hurd assured reporters that he and CEO Steve Ballmer wouldn't be taking the time if it was "just another press release" and stressed that the deal, which cuts across sales, engineering, and marketing was the tightest tie-up since Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard got together (OK, maybe now I am exaggerating).

This blog post from Microsoft does a somewhat better job of explaining, noting that there will be work across virtualization, management, business applications and the cloud, but HP and Microsoft have already been doing work together in most, if not all of those areas.

If you are struggling to grasp the exact nature of the partnership, then you are not alone. Apparently, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and HP CEO Mark Hurd were so busy raving about their partnership that they forgot to divulge any lucid details. But the information posted on Microsoft Technet does seem to be of some help: “Microsoft and HP will deliver ‘Smart Bundles’ for small and medium businesses. These are a combination of hardware and software, including HP server, storage and networking solutions, coupled with Windows Server Hyper-V and HP Insight software, delivered in a single, cost-effective package.”

The key thing that created the imperative to broaden the relationship is the recognition that the cloud is an inflection point," Muglia said. The shift means customers need a new application model, a new operational model and essentially a new way of thinking about their technology. "The kinds of things we are doing is understanding how we can work together to enable developers to build systems that are cloud-based, always available and can scale out."

As for the business environment in which the two companies will be selling, Muglia said things seem to be better than they were some months ago.

Ball-shaped mouse is ready to sale

At first it was a bit odd to navigate our MacBook Pro 13's desktop with a ball in hand, but we got the hang of it. But while we like the feel of the buttons, which are differentated with raised gel lines, they don't have enough give and we had to press too hard to double click. We also aren't thrilled that its got a long white USB cord, either. Chances are you'll be better suited by a Logitech for real productivity, but we did enjoy using a ball as a mouse more than we ever could have imagined.

Some wanted to call the Jelfin ball-shaped mouse a crapgadget, but that was until they wrapped their hands around the spherical mouse. We aren't saying the Jelfin is the best mouse in the world or that it makes you forget about your mouse-woes -- that's if you've even ever had them -- but the gel covered ball is comfortable.

Microsoft has had its share hits and misses as far as product design goes, but this Arc Mouse due this winter looks to be a slick little input device. Wireless and collapsible, the Arc Mouse promises to combine both portability and style for those of you on the "fashion edge" (their words, not ours). Hyperboles aside, this $59.95 optical jobby seems to be the real thing, and comes in both red and black. Look for it for the holiday season littering holiday gift guides.

Toshiba Satellite E205 has Core i5 and wireless video output

The Satellite E205, with a Core i5-430M processor and Intel Wireless Display technology, has one of the bolder looks among Satellite laptops. Curved lines, a uniquely hinged screen, and a slot-loading DVD/CD drive give the notebook a conceptual look. The E205 is part of Best Buy's Blue Label program, which gathers user feedback to help create a unique design.

While most Toshiba Satellites have similar design consistencies across the board, a lone and notable exception was the Best Buy-exclusive E105, reviewed in previous retail round-ups at CNET. Many of the design decisions in the E105 were ones we actually preferred over standard Satellites, so the announcement of the E205 was immediately exciting on these terms alone. But the addition of new wireless display technology that can easily stream video to an HDTV without any physical link makes the E205 technologically unique as well.

The fixed specs include a 500GB hard drive, 4GB of RAM, a 14-inch LED display, 802.11n Wi-Fi. And, of course, it comes with Windows 7 Home Premium. The E205 will be available in Best Buy stores and online starting January 17.

Intel Wireless Display Technology, a new cross-platform format that's being introduced across several manufacturers, makes its appearance here. Plugging in a small box made by Netgear into any monitor or TV, using HDMI or even component connections, will enable instant streaming via Wi-Fi of anything that appears on the computer screen. While the mirroring has a slight lag, it's an easy solution for streaming online video or movies to a larger screen without connecting any wires at resolutions up to 720p.

World's Thinnest All-in-One PC Lenovo IdeaCentre A300 review

With a screen depth of 18.5mm, the svelte Lenovo IdeaCentre A300 has claimed the title of the world's thinnest All-in-One PC. It sports a 21.5-inch, 1920-by-1080 resolution widescreen display, putting the final dimensions at 524 by 396 by 207mm (20.6 x 15.5 x 8.14 inches). Just like we can thank Apple for showing us how to develop a human-friendly operating system, a personal information manager/phone, a music player, an automated backup system, an elegant keyboard, a more functional mouse, etc.

Connectivity options include 4 USB ports, a multi-format card reader, a FireWire port, and HDMI in and out ports. You'll also find a webcam, integrated 802.11n WiFi and a wireless Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, for minimal cable clutter.

The Lenovo IdeaCentre A300 All-in-One will be available in February, starting at $600 -- but expect to pay a bit more if you spring for the roomier hard drive, faster processor, and optional extras like the integrated TV tuner, or an external optical drive.

Weighing in at 20.94 lbs, it also sports a rather striking design, setting it apart from its older (and comparatively thicker) sibling, the Lenovo IdeaCentre A600.

Despite the meager footprint Lenovo managed to pack in quite a few features, including a Core2 Duo processor, 4GB of DDR3-1066 MHz Ram, and up to 500 GB of hard drive space. Intel X4500HD integrated graphics will drive the display, so don't expect to do much gaming.

HP Printer Ink was too expensive

In a graphic comparing the "relative price of different liquids," a single mL of HP black ink #45 runs about $0.70. That's nearly twice as much as a mL of blood, which according to the data runs less than $0.40. It's also almost 14 times more expensive than Penicillin, which runs a little over $0.05 per mL.

So there you have it. Assuming the numbers are accurate, penny pinchers may be better off pricking their finger and refilling those empty ink cartridges with their own blood (please don't try this). Of course, there's always generic ink, which while usually significantly cheaper than "genuine" ink from the printer's manufacturer, have also been known to clog print heads.

In particular, I recommend inks by a company in the US called Image Specalists. There is a company in Canada called Precision Colors that sells IS inks in cartridges usable by your ink jet printer and it's considerably cheaper than"genuine" ink cartridges.

We knew printer ink was expensive, we just never bothered to put it into perspective before. And now we don't have to, because somebody else already did, and the comparisons are pretty eye-popping.
