Asus is preparing to bust out three new Eee PC netbooks at CeBit in March

Asus is preparing to launch three new 10-inch Eee PC netbooks at CeBIT next week. This includes the Eee PC 1015P, 1016P and 1018P. Little detail is known on each, however the 1015P will be similar to the current 1005P, the 1016P will be the business equivalent whilst the 1018P will be the luxurious model.

Each of the new models will sport a 10-inch screen, a chiclet keyboard, a webcam, a double array microphone, and a promised 14-hours of battery life for the 1015P and 1016P. Cases will be made of aluminum. The 1018P will be slimmer than its compatriots, and will come with USB 3.0. Unfortunately, its battery will provide power for only ten hours.

The Eee PC 1005P will come with a chiclet keyboard, webcam, double array mic and a whopping 14 hour battery life. Its chassis will be made out aluminium. The Eee PC 1016P will also sport a similar battery life.

The Asus Eee PC 1018P will be even slimmer than the 1008P at 18mm thickness. It will come with USB 3.0 and a very respectable 10-hour runtime. There are no details on pricing or availability, official news should emerge at next weeks CeBIT show in Germany.

The Broadband Computer Company has announced a new laptop for people who quake in their boots at the very sight of a computer. Called Alex, the £400 ($615) device is meant for those who find the complexity of modern computers too daunting. The Linux-based laptop has a very simple interface and features the most basic of everyday tools, including a web browser, e-mail, image editor and Microsoft Office-compatible office apps.

WiMAX Treatment for Dell's Mini 10

The netbook has all the usual Wi-Fi 802.11 connectivity including the N standard. But that standard card can be replaced with a combo 802.11n/WiMAX card. This will give the system access to either Sprint 4G or Clearwire mobile broadband.

Both WiMAX and LTE are vying to be the successor to the current 3G mobile data standards. The first 4G LTE networks are going up around the world, but in the US they have yet to roll out. What we do see stateside is WiMAX 4G service beginning to crop up. Taking note of that, Dell has decided to offer a WiMAX option on the new version of the Mini 10.

The upgrade adds $60 to the price of the computer. If you want a new Mini 10 with all that 4G goodness, you can order now, but it won’t ship until early March.

A report by broadband wireless and WiMAX market research firm Maravedis indicates impressive subscriber growth in the WiMAX camp during the first quarter, which now totals 3.5 million worldwide users. That's a 75 percent year-on-year increase. But the same report also suggests that "LTE is gaining momentum and will be the technology selected by most mobile operators worldwide moving forward."

And if that weren't enough, Maravedis notes that WiMAX operators are seeing global service revenue growth start to taper off, and ultimately concluding that "2008 was a difficult year for WiMAX."

Dell newly released UltraSharp U2711 with super cool 27-inch LCD monitor

And the U2711 has ports galore. There’s an HDMI port, two DVI-D ports, a DisplayPort, a VGA port, plug-ins for component and composite video, one USB 2.0 upstream port, four USB 2.0 downstream ports, and an 8-in-1 media card reader. In a world gone wireless, it's nice to know there's still a place to plug things in.
There are cool 27-inch LCD monitors, and then there are super cool 27-inch LCD monitors. Apple’s 27-inch iMac has one. Now too does Dell with its newly released UltraSharp U2711.
The U2711 has an In-Plane Switching (IPS) LCD, and a resolution of 2560 x 1400, which provides a more vivid and detailed image, with a wider viewing angle (178º on the vertical and horizontal). Its 12-bit internal processing can support 1.02 billion colors. The aspect ratio is 16 x 9, response time is 6ms, brightness is 350 cd/m-squared, and the contrast ratio is 1,000 to 1 (with a dynamic contrast ration of 80,000 to 1). Not too shabby.
At a time when you can buy a 24-inch LCD monitor for less than $300, why would you ever consider spending twice that much for Dell’s 24-inch UltraSharp U2410? Because the U2410 is a precision instrument; those $300 monitors are really just HDTVs sans tuners.
To be fair, those cheap monitors are a good deal if all you need is a display for watching movies, surfing the web, playing games, and editing snapshots destined for Flickr or grandma’s digital picture frame. But if your livelihood depends on factors such as visual accuracy and color fidelity—or if you’re just passionate about excellence—the U2410 is the better value.

iPad's lower-than-expected price may go lower still

Certainly, it calls to mind the company's decision to slash the price of the iPhone by $200 two months after it went on sale and the early-adopter rebate it was forced to issue afterward.
It seems odd, then, that Apple execs would even hint at the possibility of an early price cut lest they give folks already on the fence about buying the first iteration of the device more reason to stay there. Unless they're planning a prerelease price cut to really juice sales. Remember, Apple reportedly stands to make about a 42.9 percent margin on the iPad, so there's presumably plenty of room for the company to hit an even more aggressive price point that would really put the device in the Netbook range.
"While it remains to be seen how much traction the iPad gets initially, management noted that it will remain nimble (pricing could change if the company is not attracting as many customers as anticipated)," Shope wrote.
Now, it's a truism that most companies are open to price cuts on any product if they need to increase sales. That said, this is an interesting disclosure coming from Apple execs, particularly so far in advance of the iPad's actual debut.
The iPad's lower-than-expected price may go lower still if the device doesn't perform as well at market as Apple hopes. Recounting his recent meeting with some executives from the company in a research note issued last night, Credit Suisse analyst Bill Shope said Apple is evidently quite willing to get even more aggressive with the iPad's $499 to $829 pricing.

External Notebook Graphics' Big Opportunity

So what exactly is Nvidia planning for the notebook segment? We don't know, and Haas wasn't willing to divulge what exactly her company might be cooking up. But she did say that the price of graphics adapters is something that would need to be addressed.
"I think, the issue that has to be solved for something like that is the right price-point that hits the right segment. There is definitely a lot of interest in it and [this is] something we are keeping our eye on to be able to offer something there," Hass added.
Speaking in an interview with XbitLabs, Rene Haas, general manager of the notebook GPU business at Nvidia, said the graphics chip maker is at least considering external graphics adapters for notebooks.
"I think it is a big opportunity. We have two strategies at Nvidia: One is to put graphics everywhere, the other one is to [find more ways to] integrate discrete chips into the box," Haas said. "I think there is definitely a place for [external graphics cards for notebooks,] no question. We continue to look at whether this is a GPU [docking station] or external devices."
] It could either revoutionize PC gaming and make it the preferred platform for video games, or it will fail miserably when consumers pose this question: "Why should I buy this when I can get a full-fledged Xbox/PS3?" It might be slick if they could add PhysX and 3d gaming support. I would pay to have a "Gaming" module that I could detach and leave at my desk when I didn't want to carry my hulking 17" Asus laptop to class.

Samsung will Debut Transparent Screen Laptop

It appears as though transparent AMOLED displays have infatuated Samsung. It also plans to launch a see-through MP3 player christened IceTouch, which according to the report will be available in the early half of 2010. The IceTouch is likely to cost around $330. The real challenge for the consumer will be to think of a practical use for such gadgets once they cease to be a novelty.
The transparent AMOLED laptop that Samsung had on display at CES is soon going to hit the market with the promise of bragging rights galore. According to PlusPlasticElectronics, a commercial variant of the concept showcased at CES will be available within the next year.
“We have a lab in Korea that is currently working on developing a laptop with partially-transparent screen,” Samsung Electronics America's Reid Sullivan told PlusPlasticElectronics. “Soon, I imagine that all Samsung's audio-visual products will feature this technology. We want to be the first in this market.”
This is a moment that I have been waiting for, finally we are ushered to the technology often depicted in Sci-Fi movies. From Star Wars to Iron Man, this technology has always been one of the main staples of futuristic fantasy. While the real applications are many, the main thing is the look. Finally, we can have Windows in windows.
An AMOLED is an incredibly thin LED screen, with brightness nearing that of LEDs, and which has no need for backlighting. What Samsung has done is place the touch sensor onto the display, making them one in the same. (The touch sensor is 0.001 mm thick.) This single-piece device is not only less complex, it’s lighter and thinner.
According to Samsung, “Through mass production, we want to make this touch embedded AMOLED panel number one in the LCD and AMOLED market. Also, we want to mass produce touch screens and construct a system so that we can expand the display market.

Multiple Mouse Pointers in Windows will be available soon

Having a single computer interpret commands from multiple pointers could be a boon to education, says Microsoft. Many schools have fewer computers than students, and sharing PCs doesn’t always work because only one person is really able to interact with it at a time. In the recent demo on MSDN’s Channel9, some beta applications were shown off using three pointers.
It’s all the rage these days to have multitouch technology baked into software. Now Microsoft is letting us know that having multiple pointers could be cool too with the new MultiPoint SDK. The new v1.5 release is available for download and will allow developers to create applications that use multiple mice simultaneously. The SDK could allow groups to work collaboratively on a single PC.
While Redmond seems to be pushing education as the big sell, there could be other uses. There are times when a single computer with two independent mice could work just as well as two computers. The SDK is compatible with Windows 7 and Server 2008. Make sure to check out the video demo.

HP Announces G62t Notebook and review

With a starting price of $599, it has the same styling accents as HP Envy 15 and boasts very reasonable specifications. At the base configuration, it features an Intel Core i3 chip, but can be configured up to a Core i7. It also comes standard with 2GB of memory (free upgrade to 3GB, at the moment).
HP announced today that it is shipping a new laptop underneath its G60 laptop line. The HP G62t manages to pack a sweet amount of performance into a well-designed, stylish laptop. It is a wonder why they kept it so quiet.
Overall, it features nice style and affordable performance and is a welcome surprise release. a 160GB hard drive, 15.6-inch LED-backlit display, and a DVD burner. The only signs of mediocrity fall onto the integrated Intel Graphics chip that you cannot upgrade through configuration.

ARM processors become commonplace in the netbook market

ARM has an advantage over the Intel-Microsoft option: it’s cheaper. Because of cost efficiencies, Robert Castellano of Seeking Alpha, predicts ARM processors will have a 55 percent share of the netbook market by 2012. East may be onto something here. But if it comes to pass, what will gamers be left with? It’s hard to imaging running Crysis, at any frame rate, on a netbook--even one from the future.
Not a problem, says East. Yes, people love their Windows, but, he says, “the trajectory of progress in the Linux world is very, very impressive. I think it’s only a matter of time for ARM to gain market share with or without Microsoft.” So Linux, which currently has a market share smaller than Apple, is going to topple the Windows behemoth.
That’s not the only option, speculates Slashgear. It might be that the threat of Linux will force Microsoft to change--and rework Windows so it will support non-x86 hardware. Slashgear points to Texas Instruments’ OMAP4, NVIDIA’s Tegra 2, and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon, in addition to ARM, as hints of a non-Intel/AMD future. Microsoft may have to adapt or die.
There are some interesting takes on the future of PCs, and then there’s Warren East’s take on the future of PCs. East is the CEO of ARM, which produces processors for mobile products, which offers good power and low energy consumption. According to East, not only will ARM processors become commonplace in the netbook market, but that the netbook market will come to represent 90 percent of the PC industry.
What’s particularly amazing about East’s projection of the future is that ARM’s processors lack Windows support. It’s going to be a pretty tough transition to ARM processors if they can’t run the dominate operating system for PCs.

Apple issued the anticipated firmware update for their 27-inch iMacs

In this knowledgebase document on the update, Apple suggests if you continue to experience display flickering issues after the firmware update has been applied, you should check to ensure you have applied the previously released "27-inch iMac Graphics Firmware Update 1.0," which updated the graphics cards on the new systems.
Since these updates and the problems they address have to do with firmware, you might try resetting the system's PRAM and SMC after you have applied the update. Doing this should reset firmware settings and configurations to default values, and clear any potential contributions to the problem by faulty settings.
Along with the recent update to iTunes that Apple released, the company also issued the anticipated firmware update for their 27-inch iMacs which is an update for the display hardware itself, and is supposed to help address video problems that have plagued the new machines. These have included blank displays, yellow-tinted LCD colors, and display flickering, of which the latter is addressed by this update.
Initial reports on the update appear to be mixed. So far, people who have not had any flickering problems with their iMacs have not noticed any difference upon applying the update. However, a few members on the Apple discussion boards have commented that applying the update has made the problem worse. Despite these instances, for others the update has worked as expected.

Microsoft announcement of a new gaming keyboard

More specifically, the new SideWinder's anti-ghosting tech allows gamers hopped up on Red Bull to furiously mash up to 26 keys simultaneously without the PC ever skipping a beat.
In addition to anti-ghosting, Microsoft's latest plank also boasts mode switching (standard mode and two gaming modes), automatic profile switching, programmable macro keys (three banks of six keys to assign up to 18 macros per profile), in-game macro recording, automatic macro repetition, backlit keys with three illumination levels, and media keys.
Straight out of Redmond's Hardware division this morning is the announcement of a new gaming keyboard, the SideWinder X4 Keyboard with "advanced anti-ghosting technology."
"We're always looking for new and novel ways to enhance people's interactions with their PCs," said Steven Bathiche, research manager of the Applied Sciences Group at Microsoft. "We know that ghosting can be a problem for gamers, so we wanted to develop a way to eliminate this issue and improve the overall gaming experience, and we've succeeded with the new anti-ghosting technology in the SideWinder X4 Keyboard."
