Dell working on Android gadget

Dell is developing a pocket-size Internet device using Google's Android operating system that could take on Apple's iPod Touch, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal on Monday.
Two people who have seen early prototypes of the device told the newspaper it looks like Apple's iPod Touch but slightly larger. And like the iPod Touch, the device isn't expected to include a cellular phone. The device is considered part of a new category of gadgets called mobile Internet devices, or MIDs, which are designed to fit into the market between a mobile phone and a laptop or Netbook computer.
The device could go on sale as early as the second half of 2009, according to the Wall Street Journal's sources.
Dell supposedly started working on the new device about a year ago as a way to compete against Apple's iPod business. The Journal also cited an unnamed source who said that Dell has considered selling the new Internet device through a cell phone carrier. Dell and other computer makers such as Hewlett-Packard already sell their Netbooks through cell phone operators.
Dell has long been rumored to be making a smartphone. And the company has also been rumored to be testing the Android software for its smartphone and possible for its Netbooks. With these developments in the works, it probably wouldn't take much to also develop a portable Internet device using the same operating system without the phone. That's what Apple did with the iPod Touch.
There was a time when cost alone was enough to be successful. After all in the early days of computers the innovators like Apple and IBM charged a lot for their computers and there was plenty of room for Dell to become successful simply with a business model based on cutting costs.
Dell has learned the hard way that in today's market to be a cost cutter means margins so small the company struggles to make a profit. The companies that tend to innovate and experiment with new platforms like Apple with its iPhone/iPod lines tends to do well because their business model relies on the high margins and higher pricing of emerging markets.

Sony considers adding phone to PSP?

The newest version of Sony's PlayStation Portable isn't even on sale yet, but the company is already looking ahead to what's next, according to Reuters.
The electronics giant is looking into making a combination gadget that would meld its PSP gaming system with the cell phones made by Sony Ericsson, its joint venture Swedish electronics maker Ericsson, according to Reuters, which cited the Nikkei business daily.
Sony reportedly plans to put together a team as early as July to begin development of the new gadget. Sony no doubt has its eye on Apple's iPhone, which is already popular with consumers and is now getting more serious attention from game developers as a platform for their games.
This isn't the first time rumors of this nature have circulated. In 2007, Sony raised eyebrows with a patent filing that appeared to show a PSP-like device with phone capabilities, and British Telecom said it was working with the company to bring voice and video chat to the PSP.
Larger keyboards are simple for those who can touch-type.
To those not so good, large keyboards are pretty daunting to them, and is one of the major reasons that people are pushed away from computers. (yes, this one IS a fact, computer accessibility is one of the major things that can push people away)
A smaller keyboard is less daunting to those people because they can find the key they want really quickly. Touch-screens offer that kind of system. And the plus is it also comes with instant feedback, since the input field is within the view of the keyboard. If you have ever seen a person typing a key and looking up to see they typed it, you can see why.

Sony: First Look video

Sony's got an early demo unit of the PSP Go floating around New York, and we got to spend a little time with it--and Sony PlayStation team rep Al De Leon.
We don't have anything new or earth-shattering to report other than to say we like the smaller design, and the PSP Go does feel pretty good resting in your hands. Oh, and we also have some video shot with a Flip UltraHD (sorry the tight shots aren't sharper but the Flip just isn't good at close-ups).
The PSP Go ($250) is set for release this October and we should have a review up the day it launches. In the meantime, you can read our substantial preview.
sony gets a lot of beef from a*sholes that expect everything to be dirt cheap from the proletariat that thinks everyone should be able to afford their products, but they continue to deliver quality which *surprisingly* costs money. its not a product for everyone, its for the financially secure than want quality. this will leave a lot of customers out, and possibly cost sony in the long run, however sony usually manages to deliver extra quality for extra cost, certainly not always the case, but i think the PSP is one of the products that provides the extra quality.

HP "world's first web-connected printer" with Touchsmart Web

Looking to make the wild and not-entirely-wondrous world of printers exciting for the first time in decades, HP has just unveiled the "world's first web-connected printer." If you're wondering how it plans on accomplishing such an impossible mission, let us just say this: the Photosmart Premium is going the way of the widget. Up on the 4.33-inch front panel is Touchsmart Web, a touchscreen interface with several bundled, online apps to accommodate usual paper-friendly tasks such as printing Google maps, tickets from Fandango, coupons, recipes, Sudoku, etc. There's even a full-on HD Apps Studio just in case downloading new apps on one's printer really becomes the new hotness. The API's being made open for the entire realm of developers, but we have to wonder what kind of interest we'll see here. Pricing is set for $399, and if you're thinking "why not just buy a cheap netbook and plug it into my current model" we hear ya, but we get the impression this is aimed squarely at another crowd. Samsung's World's First 32GB DDR3 Module review

We're just now starting to get used to seeing 6GB and 12GB of total memory in desktop systems, but such capacities are suddenly quaint compared to the latest 32GB modules Samsung's cooked up, even if not headed for the desktop.
According to Samsung, it's the world's first 32GB DDR3 RAM stick, and it was built using a 50nm process. A total of 72Gb (gigabit) DDR3 chip dies arranged in a row of nine quad-die packaged 16Gb DDR3s are packed on each side of the module, resulting in 32GB of total memory. And in addition to boasting higher capacity, Samsung says its 32GB RDIMM also improves throughput by 20 percent and consumes less power at 1.35V compared to previous sticks running 1.5V.
No word yet on price or availability, or when Samsung plans to launch its 8GB modules designed for the desktop.
