Acer comes with 23-inch T230H multitouch monitor

Acer hasn't exactly been slacking when it comes to Windows 7-related hardware, but it looks like its still putting the final touches on its launch line-up, with it now rolling out a new multitouch monitor to complement its range of laptops and desktops. What's more, at a full 23-inches, the company's new T230H monitor best similar offerings from Dell and HP in terms of sheer size, and it packs some respectable specs across the board, including a full 1920 x 1080 resolution, a 2ms response time, a promised 80,000:1 contrast ratio (take that with the usual grain of salt), and an HDMI port in addition to DVI and VGA. Still no official word on US pricing, it seems, but this one will apparently run €349 in Europe.
a few years ago I worked in radio communications, and the consoles they used at the communications centers (think police or fire station) were usually PC screens and then special button panels for different functions. They tried touch screens, but found that even when the screens were set into hollows in the desks, that the operators didn't like using them too much.
For a start, pressing a hard screen all day instead of a compliant switch wasn't too comfortable, but the other effect was nicknamed "gorilla arm", the effect of having to hold your arm in the arm all the time in order to raise your hand to the screen. In the end, a compromise was reached - a keyboard for most of the activities, and the touch screen could be used for non-routing activities such as alerts and special features where a reconfigurable touch panel was ideal.
I personally am looking forward to display tech which allows us to maintain a much longer focal length (kind of like those pictures with hidden images). projectors don't work because they require to much space. however maybe there's a way to reflect light only back to its source, so everyone can look at the same screen but see a different image.

Google may be Monitor Your Domestic Power Usage in the future

PowerMeter will collect electricity data every half hour and gas data once a day. Customers can view the aggregated data on the PowerMeter website where it will have been used to generate some nifty graphs and tables. Participating customers will receive the service at no charge.
Google already knows more about you than you probably care to think about. In the not too distant future, they might also know about your power usage patterns. Google’s PowerMeter utility monitoring service has finally found its first partners. First Utility in the UK, and Yello Strom, a German utility, have both signed up to deliver customer usage data to Google (provided the customer agrees).
The hope is that PoweMeter users will be more conscious of their energy use. Yello Strom executive director, Martin Vesper, said of the service, “When people know exactly what is going on with their energy usage, they can use energy efficiently without sacrificing convenience.” Google indicated that PowerMeter is a project from Google.org, Google’s philanthropic foundation. So, would you sign up if you could?
The free tool, called PowerMeter, will allow users to view and thoroughly analyze their household energy consumption data. The platform, currently in closed beta, requires that the user possess a smart meter. It will let users compare the energy-appetite of different devices within their house, besides making it possible for users to compare each other’s energy consumption trends.

Dell release Extremely Rugged Tablet PC: Latitude XT2 XFR

What does that mean? Well, for one, it can operate in temperatures ranging from minus 10 up 140 degrees Fahrenheit. It also features a thermal management system designed to keep things cool but also eliminate dust and water from entering the device.
Dell unveiled a new ruggedized convertible tablet called the Latitude XT2 XFR today. It measures in at 1.5 inches thick making it the thinnest rugged convertible laptop on the market.
It is a “work in the field” type laptop weighing 5.4 pounds using a 4-cell battery. It features a 12.1-inch LED backlit display with multi-touch and gesture controls, Core 2 Duo processor (SU9600), and can support up to 5GB of RAM. The Dell engineers weren’t just hoping this thing could handle a coffee spill or a three centimeter drop, it has been designed to meet MIL-810G standards and is expected to be certified soon.
The new laptop starts at $3,599 and will be sold in the U.S., Canada, UK, France, Italy, Spain and Germany. One feature I would like to see is a flush screen. If the laptop is used outdoors and especially in dusty conditions, you get a lot of dust buildup in the corners of the screen. It would be nice to have the screen flush with the bezel so you could wipe it easily.
Motion's rugged new J3400 all-in-one tablet PC is being billed as "the ultimate computing tool" for anyone wo needs a "robust device" for both indoor and outdoor use. And it's hard to argue that claim, given that it comes equipped with two battery compartments for all-day battery life and a 12.1-inch widescreen outdoor display with Motion's View Anywhere technology.
"The J3400 was developed based on more than seven years of tablet PC experience, and feedback from customers across industries," said David Altounian, president and CEO, Motion Computing. "It is a mobile computing device with the capabilities our customers are demanding – a powerful processor with a compact rugged design that supports users who must be productive whether in the field or in the office."

Intel Atom N470 Allow Double Memory for Other Netbooks

Currently, netbooks are limited to 1GB of RAM in most instances. When the N470 is released around March 2010 that limit will be raised to 2GB. Manufacturers will also be able to include a 32GB solid state drive if they so choose. Intel boldly pointed out that they could totally put Intel’s Moblin OS on them too… no pressure though.
There’s very little to differentiate one netbook from another these days. Manufacturers are basically just putting different enclosures around the same hardware. That’s largely a result of restrictions placed on netbook specs by Intel and Microsoft. With the upcoming Atom N470 (Pineview), the spec requirements will be lifted a bit, but they’ll still be there.
While it’s nice to some movement here, is it anywhere near enough? Don’t most users that want more RAM just add it anyway? So, good news, or just plain depressing?
Originally expected to show up in the second half of 2009, Intel has begun shipping its Atom N280 processor to PC makers several months ahead of schedule, says InfoWorld. Like its predecessor, the N270, the newest Atom also utilizes a single-core design and is intended for netbooks, but there's more than meets the eye than a simple clockspeed boost.
Unlike the N270, which was paired with the 945GSE chipset, the N280 + GN40 chipset combo brings high-definition content to netbooks. The hardware-based high definition video decoder makes it possible to view 720p HD videos, making the platform a bit more competitive with Nvidia's upcoming Ion, which brings 1080p content to the table.

Acer's Aspire 1420P Tablet Turns Heads display review

According to the tablet's U.S. product page (yep, this one's headed for the States), the convertible display sports a built-in accelerometer that automatically rotates images so you can "use it as a photo frame, portable cinema, or the [as] the perfect presentation tool."
Acer president Scott Lin says his company has big plans for the tablet PC market, and today the company put on display its new Aspire 1420P tablet during a press event in China.
The sleek 11.6-inch tablet features a swiveling LED touchscreen with multitouch support, an Intel Celeron SU2300 processor (1.2GHz, 1MB L2 cache, 800MHz frontside bus), 2GB of DDR3 memory (expandable to 8GB), a 250GB hard drive, 802.11b/g/Draft-N, a multi-card reader, optional 3G support, and Windows 7.
What the product page doesn't tell us is when the 1420P will be released and at what price.
If I want a Tablet I will purchase a Lenovo Thinkpad X200. It has all of the above features, but with a Core 2 Duo low voltage processor, up to 500 GB HDD (or SSD drive), full size spill resistant KB, mobile broadband plus up to 9 hours on the extended batttery, 6 on the standad. Let's not forget the Thinkpad quality and reliabity, something that Acer can only dream about having.
Thanks to the Duo Wireless Digital Pen Mouse, all it takes is a clip on sensor and a wireless pen to make the conversion from mouse to touchscreen. Clipping the sensor onto the top of your screen will allow you to doodle all you want, directly on your LCD. Though, at $44 it’s suspected that the resolution might not be up to par with other kits. But if you’re looking for a very cheap alternative (cheaper than some traditional mice), it’s definitely worth checking out.

EVGA to Launch Hybrid Graphics Card on Halloween

It's mostly speculation at this point, but the card is rumored to combine GT200b and G92b GPUs onto a single PCB. Why the mix? The GT200b will be responsible for rendering all those pretty graphics while you're saving the universe, and the GT92b will flex its PhysX muscle.
Ghosts and goblins aren't the only things you'll see this Halloween. According to news and rumor site Fudzilla, EVGA and Nvidia have joined forces to launch a hybrid graphics card on October 31st.
Fudzilla says the hybrid card will most likely sport a GTX 275 and GTS 250, which would give the card 240 stream processors and 896MB of memory for rendering, and 128 stream processors and 512MB of memory for PhysX duties. Not a bad idea to combine the two on a single piece of hardware, albeit it could be somewhat risky this close to the launch of Fermi.
The first is the GT220, a half-height card with 48 processor cores chugging along at 615MHz (GPU) with 1GB of GDDR3 memory running a 790MHz on a 128-bit memory interface. That adds up to 25.3GB/s of memory bandwidth. For what it's worth, the OEM card also boasts support for DirectX 10.1.
Also launched is the G210, another half-height OEM card sporting DirectX 10.1 support. As you might have surmised from the number scheme, the G210 checks in with lower specs than the GT220. Specifically, 16 processor cores with the GPU clocked at 589MHz, and 512MB of DDR2 memory clocked at 500MHz on a 64-bit bus. The lower clocks and bus chops the memory bandwidth down to 8GB/s.

Apple World's First Multi-Touch Mouse review

Those who have ever navigated a Mac trackpad will feel right at home with the ability to perform two-finger swipes, but the Magic Mouse also allows single-finger horizontal and vertical scrolling and software-based inertia. What you won't find, however, is pinch-zoom support.
Whether it's your smartphone, e-book reader, or portable media player, the multi-touch trend is taking over just about every possible segment, and that now includes the computer mouse. Not surprisingly, it's Apple -- not Logitech or Microsoft -- who's able to lay claim to the world's first multi-touch mouse.
Dubbed the Magic Mouse, Apple's latest rodent comes with a single button and sports a hard acrylic multi-touch surface on the top. It also boasts wireless connectivity, a low profile design, Bluetooth, and a claimed four-month battery life. The Magic Mouse goes on sale today for $69 and comes standard with every new iMac.
touchscreen technology is really cool to play with, but for anything other than pure novelty or goofing off with dumb little itouch/iphone games, i wouldnt want touch. i like the tangibility of a button, the click you can feel and hear. typing on a touch screen? forget about it. this is a cool mouse and i applaud the innovation, and would certainly like to play with it, but ill stick with my regular click-mouse and scroll wheel.
Apple needs to get their head out of their asses. Look that that thing. Sure it has multitouch super features, probably a billion DPI but damn that thing looks almost as comfortable as the Imac hockey puck mouse! Get it right apple, I prefer not to have carpul tunnel buy age 25.

Intel, IBM Execs talk about Insider Trading Chargers

One alleged illegal instance includes Goel giving billionaire investor Raj Rajaratnam a heads up on January 8, 2007 that Intel share prices would likely rise over the next couple of days. According to the feds, this prompted Rajaratnam to purchase 1 million shares of Intel stock, and then 500,000 more on January 11. On January 16, he unloaded all of his Intel stock, netting about $1 million profits in a matter of four days.
Robert Moffat, IBM's highest ranking hardware executive and front runner to carry the CEO torch, has been indicted on chargers of insider trading. So has Rajiv Goel, a managing director of Intel subsidiary, Intel Capital, and Anil Kumar, a director at consulting firm McKinsey & Co. and adviser to AMD.
Insider trading carries some serious repercussions, and if found guilty, all three could be looking at prison time. And it's not looking good. Thanks to wiretapped phone conversations and statements from an informant, SEC investigators believe they can show how the trio used inside information and well-timed trades to accumulate more than $25 million in illegal gains.
Goel is also accused of alerting Rajaratnam about an impending deal between Clearwire and Sprint, which ended up netting him another $750,000 in profits.

Dell Refunds Customer's Money

Cobbett blogged about his reasons for turning down the EULA saying, “Have you ever actually read the Microsoft Windows End User License Agreement? It's pretty scary what you commit yourself to.” By not starting Windows, Cobbett was legally entitled to a refund on the software.
So you just bought a new PC, but you don’t buy into the closed-source software hegemony of Microsoft? You’re in luck. With only a few months of your time, and some technical expertise, you too can get a refund on Windows. That’s just what Graeme Cobbett did recently. Knowing that he intended to run Linux Mint on his new Dell Studio 1555, he informed Dell that he did not agree to the Windows EULA.
The pertinent section of the EULA reads, “By using the software, you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use the software. Instead, return it to the retailer for a refund or credit.” After two months and 14 emails, Cobbett had his $115 refund. Would it be worth it to you?
What ever happened to the day when you ordered a PC where you could click the OS box and select none? I haven't ever really ordered a PC (only one Alienware Laptop), but I remember helping others and seeing that option.
Although the official release of Beta 1 of Windows 7 isn't expected until early January, a leaked copy of what looks like Beta 1's been making the rounds on the Internet for a few days. ZDNet's Ed Bott (a one-time colleague of mine back in the days of Windows Me) has spent some "quality time" with the build, and reports some interesting tidbits from the EULA.

Uruguay provide a laptop for every primary school student

Uruguay's been a huge fan of the One Laptop Per Child initiative for quite some time, and while we're still unsure if it's the entity's biggest customer, the aforesaid nation is certainly doing some serious business with Nicholas Negroponte and Company. After the first swath of youngsters received their green and white XOs back in May of 2007, the final smattering of kids have now joined the proud group of laptop-toting tots in the country's circuit of primary schools. You heard right -- every last pupil in Uruguay's primary school system now has a laptop and a growing love for Linux, and we're told that the whole thing cost the country less than five percent of its entire education budget. So, who's next?
Over the last two years 362,000 pupils and 18,000 teachers have been involved in the scheme. The "Plan Ceibal" (Education Connect) project has allowed many families access to the world of computers and the internet for the first time.
Uruguay is part of the One Laptop Per Child scheme, an organisation set up by internet pioneer Nicholas Negroponte. His original vision was to provide laptops at $100 (£61) but they proved more expensive. The Uruguay programme has cost the state $260 (£159) per child, including maintenance costs, equipment repairs, training for the teachers and internet connection.
Now that all the schoolchildren have their computers, the authorities say that they will endeavour keep the schools connected, particularly those in rural areas, where many still do not have internet access.
There are plans to extend the scheme to secondary schools and pre-school children next year. Organisers of the Plan Ceibal have set up a consultancy in order to advise other countries wishing to replicate the Uruguayan experience.

Kanex Mini DisplayPort Adapter To HDMI 1080p Video review

Your Mac mini cranks out its video via DisplayPort and audio via a mini Toslink. Chances are your home entertainment system doesn't like either of those. It will, however, like the Kanex Mini DisplayPort Adapter, which can turn a DisplayPort video signal into a 1080p signal over HDMI, and will even integrate either digital or analog audio into the mix. It's USB powered, so there's no need for a clunky power adapter, and while $70 isn't particularly cheap for a chubby cable ($50 for the USB analog audio model), it's about the cleanest way to get your Mini pumping tunes and vids through your system.
Bring a true digital experience to your home theater with our fully digital Mini DisplayPort adapter that supports 1080p video and digital audio for Apple MacBook, MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, iMac.
With audio limitation from Mini Displayport they've combined Apple Mini Jack digital audio output with Mini DisplayPort digital video output into a single HDMI output solution to bring a true audio video experience with full HD 1080p video and full digital audio 5.1 support. Powered by USB so no external power source is needed.

Acer's Latest Netbook Runs Android

The downside to dual-booting is that Acer still has to factor in the cost of a Windows 7 license, so it seems pointless to toss an open-source OS into the fray without the benefity of a cost reduction. But Acer might be on to something by using Android as essentially a Splashtop replacement, which would count as an extra feature for those who planned on purchased a Windows 7-based netbook anyway.
Holy dual-platforming netbooks, Batman, have you seen Acer's revamped Aspire One D250? The netbook has developed a split personality since we last saw it and now rolls with both Google's open-source Android OS and Microsoft's closed-source Windows 7 software in 32-bit form.
But this isn't your typical dual-booting setup. To load Windows 7, you must first fire up Android and poke around the OS's slide-out menu to select "Switch OS." Jim Wong, Acer's Senior Corporate VP, downplayed the additional step, noting that Android gives users "instant on" functionality. And judging by the YouTube clip, he's right - following the POST screen, Android appears to boot in under 10 seconds.
Acer's dual-boot strategy is a continuation of the company's previous plan to ship a combo Android/WinXP ultraportable. Acer's original stance was that Android hadn't matured to the point where it would be a suitable OS for netbooks, at least in standalone form, and that a dual-boot solution would carry less risk than an Android-only netbook. There's probably some truth to that, considering XP-based netbooks remain a much more popular choice than ones running Linux.

Acer release First Windows 7 Netbook

Acer has made clear its intent to be on the Windows 7 gravy train when it leaves the station with the announcement it will ship a version of it’s Aspire One D250 netbook with Windows 7 when Microsoft’s new operating system makes its debut next week.
The Aspire One D250 comes with a 10.1-inch screen, with a resolution of 1,280 by 720; a 1.66GHz Atom N280 processor; and a 160GB hard drive. Battery life, according to Acer, is 3.5 hours, with a long-life battery capable of 7.5 hours available as an option.
Acer is reportedly on the verge of releasing a brand new Aspire One that will feature a larger 11.6-inch panel (notably bigger than the 10.1-inch versions available today), and will go down in history for dancing on the line between netbook and notebook.
This new Aspire one will come with a 1366x768 16:9 screen, an Intel Atom Z530 processor and the Poulsbo chipset, along with GMA500 graphics. There’s even supposed to be an extended battery option that will allow up to eight hours of battery life.

HP ProBook 4510s-NX613EA for business

P's ProBook range certainly makes an impression. Not only is it very good value for money - in the 15.6in NX613EA you're getting a capable 2.1GHz Core 2 Duo CPU, 3GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive and plenty of extras for just £470 excluding VAT - for a business laptop it's also quite visually alarming.
Below the metal grille we have an isolation-style keyboard, which like Apple, HP refers to as 'chicklet'. Keys are somewhat smaller than we're used to seeing on HP laptops, but as usual it's still very comfortable and the new design allows for plenty of key separation. A slightly narrower than normal left-Ctrl key is the only compromise in the layout, but it's a small inconvenience given you also benefit from a full number pad. Fundamentally, then, this is a very good keyboard and it delivers excellent tactile feedback, too.
Below the excellent keyboard is a raised wrist rest coated in soft-touch plastic; an effect continued on the touchpad and its buttons. Unfortunately this finish really shows off grease so it's almost as bad as the lid, which is hardly ideal in a business laptop that might be shared among different people. It looks and feels nice, but it's not necessarily practical.
Before you even open the 4510s up, its solid, unashamedly square chassis forms a stark contrast to most mobile machines with their curves and tapered edges. Unfortunately the glossy black lid, though it looks nice, picks up fingerprints like the CSI team on a triple homicide. There's also just a bit too much flex for our liking towards the lid's centre.
Opening up the laptop reveals a good-looking, all-black interior. This isn't quite the dull, ugly appearance of most cheap laptops, though it's no design marvel, either. Housed within the glossy bezel is a 2.0 megapixel webcam, while below its lower edge is a raised metal grille, containing a silver shortcut button and power button both tastefully backlit in cyan.

Microsoft wants you to love the apps on your Windows Phone

Ecstatic, the apps all run down the stairs to do… whatever it is apps in corporeal form do to people. Doesn’t matter, they all seems really happy. Is this all some fantasy world where people love their WinMo apps? Or is it maybe just your future? Check out the vid for yourself at the link.
Microsoft wants you to love the apps on your Windows Phone. In a new advert for Windows Phones we see what it can be like to love your apps. A somewhat depressed fellow is on his way out, and all his beloved Windows apps sulk around, knowing they’ll be left behind.
As our Microsoft hero walks out the door, he’s followed by Word, Outlook, Twitter, and all the rest. It’s like the end of Casablanca. Two ships passing in the night and such. Just as you fear the goodbye is coming, something magical happens. This Windows Phone loving dude shows his beloveds that he, in fact, has a Windows Phone. You think they’d have known that.
According to news and rumor site The Inquirer, Microsoft plans to rebrand its Windows Mobile operating system to Windows Phone. The name change "reflects the upcoming desktop operating system release where people away from their PC can have the same experience everywhere," Microsoft explains.
The Windows Phone branding will be applied to Windows Mobile 6.1, the upcoming 6.5 release, and also to the multitouch-capable WIndows Mobile 7, due out sometime in 2010. There's no word yet on when the new Windows Phone branding will be implemented, nor do we have much info on why Microsoft has decided to rebrand, other than to make it easier for consumers.

Notebooks fall, Netbooks rise?

Mini-notes have been a significant contributor to volume growth in the portable PC market as their very attractive price points make owning a secondary computer viable for many consumers. However, the lower ASPs of these devices are clearly having a negative impact on portable PC market revenue," John F. Jacobs, DisplaySearch's director of notebook market research, said in a statement. "For 2009, we expect continued ASP erosion across all portable computer categories, leading to the first Y/Y decline of portable computer revenue."
Though traditional notebooks still command an 89 percent slice of the market, their second quarter sales fell to $23.2 billion, a 14 percent decline from the second quarter of 2008.
Measuring 2009's second quarter against the prior year's quarter, sales fell in all subcategories of the portable PC market, including ultraportables and desktop replacements, the report noted. PCs in the 13-inch to 16-inch range managed to eke out a gain, but only measured against the first quarter of 2009.
The low prices of Netbooks appeal to consumers looking for a second PC and to those in emerging markets who don't need the rich and costly features of a large laptop. The market has also been buoyed by cable and telecommunications providers who have doled out Netbooks to customers who sign up for lengthy contracts.
Despite their growing market share, Netbooks have brought down revenue in the portable PC market due to their low average selling price (ASP).
Netbooks continue to soar in sales at the expense of the venerable notebook, according to a new report from DisplaySearch.
Revenues for Netbooks, or mini-notebooks, rose to $3 billion in the second quarter of the year, a leap of 264 percent over the second quarter of 2008, according to the new "Quarterly Notebook PC Shipment and Forecast Report" released Thursday. With those gains, Netbooks now enjoy an 11.7 percent share of the portable PC market.

Sony Vaio X Shrinks Size review

The price tag is steep (starts at $1299) for netbook-grade performance. You can check out more pics and pre-order your own at the Sony Style site. Is the X Series too rich for your blood?
Sony is accepting pre-orders for its newest laptop, the Sony Vaio X Series. Though most would consider this a “netbook” solution due to its hardware, it might be one of the snazziest, albeit most expensive, looking netbooks on the market.
Sony managed to cram an 11.1” widescreen, up to 2GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD and a 2GHz Intel Atom processor into a half-inch body weighing 1.6 pounds. They piled up some extras too: internal Verizon Mobile Broadband, GPS, webcam, and memory card readers. Oh, did I forget to mention, you could get up to 14 hours of use out of the included, extended battery (up to 3.5 hours with the standard).
No doubt, the extended battery increases the size and weight of the book, but all-things-considered it may be worth it to be that long without a power cable.
